Interaction, in relation. Thank you to everyone who paused, took a moment to notice, to see, to contemplate, to question, and for all the beautiful comments and observations. @collectartfair @design_nationuk West Wing W14. by @marystephens7871

As a yoga teacher and ceramics artist I combine practices in these objects of contemplation. If you’re attending the last day of Collect 2026, at Somerset House, they can be seen in W14, Design Nation.
A Potter’s meditation on the living philosophy of Yoga.
Individual Consciousness within Universal Consciousness

In the points of stillness, a pause, a moment to be present, to notice, we connect with ourselves, those around us and the world around us. The practice of yoga helping you to undo learnt behaviours and beliefs to return to more of your true nature, true-self, your individual consciousness, allowing you to become more aware and present.
In combining my practices of yoga and ceramics I use material properties of thrown, trimmed and carved porcelain, process, forms and outcomes as embodied metaphors of a lived experience of yoga. Drawing on accepted personification of pots as bodies, containers of life, to represent individual consciousness - the true-self. Combined with boundary metaphor, circles as cycles of life - to orientate self within place, world, environment, within the whole – within universal consciousness.
The objects of contemplation I’m showing at Collect are individual pieces, a pot and a circle/curved form, which when combined lift and hold each other at a point that they cannot rest at on their own. Finding balance and harmony, stillness, in connection, in relation. by @marystephens7871

Reflection in the mirror of my old cabinet. Love the difference in the bounce of light off the interior of the pot and glow thought the porcelain that the mirror reflects. by @marystephens7871

As a potter when you’re asked if you could make 100 porcelain cups to celebrate 20 years the yes is with caution. There is so much that can go wrong in the process. Even the hot weather has made balancing out body and handle difficult. I’ve learnt a lot, made mistakes, found my own way. Thank you for trusting me with making a handmade, personal product as part of your celebration of the beautiful work you make. A craft supporting a craft. by @marystephens7871
