It’s who I am. There are about 15-20 books that won’t be posted because maybe it was me. ā€œMaybe it was some undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of underdone potato,ā€ as Scrooge would say. šŸ˜‰

I’m really backlogged with all the fab books I’ve read this year, though. Probably won’t get every 4 or 5 star posted… but I won’t run out of content. šŸ™ƒšŸ„³

The Sphinx by Edgar Allen Poe
A plague, a visit, a hideous creature...this is Poe at his best.

Cholera hits the New York area in 1832. A man visits a relative during this sickly time. The man is sitting near his window one day, reading a book containing details about cholera, when he looks out and sees a hideous creature on top of a hill across the river. The creature is larger than a ship and it is climbing down the embankment. Surely the man’s focus on the deadly aspect of cholera bring about this fearful telling.

True to Poe form, we are on the edge of our seats wondering if the creature will attack.

What do you think? It’s a short story, take a look.

Kudos Poe.

Highly Recommended

The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris by Evie Woods is a sensational, heartwarming, enduring read.

Edith is young and is searching for a job. She sees a job ad for an assistant manager of a bakery in Paris. This is it. This is her chance to break free. To have her own place, her own job, and meet new people. The good news is the job called for a person who could speak English. Well, that was her. True, her French was minimal, to say the least, but she could learn.

She is hired, packs her belongings, and flies to Paris. The cabby tells her the address is not in Paris, but a small town near. Edith arrives at the bakery and is shown her tiny quarters on the top level of the shop. She finds a locked door that seems to lead to a basement. The owner tells her to stay away. What is in the basement sets the mystery.

This story is a delightful read, one you won’t put down. I absolutely adored it.

Highly recommended

WHITE MISTY BEINGS
It is 6:30 am.
A sliver of light risks
A duo, waged against night.
She sees all that dark
Has done in her absence,
In particular the gathering
Of white-sheeted misty beings.

They stand on a southern shore
Of the lake, outside a cabin door.
What was discussed remains a mystery.

The sliver, now a slice insights a gavel’s drop
And a shout of ā€œMeeting adjourned
Return to appointed duties.ā€
Lines of misty beings form,
The first sets out as one.
They glide over the chilled lake surface.

Like a battalion called to service
Follows the second and the third.
Line upon line the unit presses on to battle.
No sound comes from the ranks
They faced forward. Eyes on task
From first to last.

The slice now a wedge
Warms the air… the wielded weapon.
Ghostly misty beings’ heads bob together
Forever shifting onward. Staying their call
Even as they vanish…into golden air.

Sun is declared
The winner.

The Last Time We Drowned by Saratoga Schaefer was a fun Insta-bookstagram challenge cautionary tale, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

We meet Charlie, who is having considerable financial trouble. She goes to a job interview and is hired on the spot to join a team of influencers. They live on a yacht. The job entails crafting daily posts. Each employee has their own theme.

Charlie meets the other girls and learns she is replacing a girl who took a new job elsewhere. Issues arise among the girls. A hurricane traps them on board. One person dies, and questions arise about another who may be dead. Everyone is a suspect.

I loved the setting, the subject, the storyline, the pacing, the characters, the twists...whoa, this could play out in real life. Spooky. So well done.

Highly recommend

Inspiring!

Babel by R.F.Kuang reads, in many ways, like Les Misérables.

I am not a linguist; I am not Asian; I didn’t attend Oxford; nor am I British, but I didn’t have to be French to see the story in Les Misérables and rank it an all-time favorite. These are stories that fight for a cause.

Babel raises an issue; what I read in the text was the issue my corner of the world is fighting. The naysayers. The ā€œit isn’t badā€ sayers. Since the dawn of time, someone takes over, dupes society into believing them, a remnant rises and tries to stop the tyranny. The believing (duped) society joins forces against the remnant…at all costs.

To me, this, like Les Misérables, is a magnificently told cautionary tale. Apply it to the issue in your corner of the world.

An incredible story.

Highly recommended. A 2026 top 10 for me

WOODS IN THE RAIN
I dare not use an umbrella
When walking through the woods,
Though rain pours in sheets
And deepening puddles soak my feet.
For if I did,
My view would be obscured.

What leaves above would I see
With domed fabric in the way?

True, fallen drops
Land on my head
Then crawl down my brow
And on to my lashes
Then dribble into my eyes
But if I did…

I’d be deprived
Of photographing autumn leaves
And sleeves of spiderwebs
Clinging to branches in the canopy,
Ornamented with crystal
Droplets clinging,
Weighing heavy,
Dangling
'Til they're droppin'
On top of me.

Walk in the woods with me….

Caller Unknown by Gillian McAllister intrigued and surprised me. The dominant theme superbly told was a mother’s love for her daughter.

Genre: SUSPENSE
Simone is the mom who runs a restaurant in the UK. Her daughter went to Texas in the States. Her daughter suggests Mom come for a vacation. They could go camping, see Texas, have a wonderful time. Simone lands, excited to see her 18-year-old daughter. They meet, enjoy an evening in a rental, then go to bed. In the morning, Simone finds Lucy missing and a burner phone on her bed. There is a text: ā€œWe have your daughter.ā€

This is the setup that begs the question: how far will a Mother go to save her daughter?

Simone is willing to get money, find money, sell the restaurant, anything to get her daughter back. But the kidnapper doesn’t want money. They want Simone to follow instructions that require her to do something illegal. When the job is done, she will get her daughter back. If she calls the police, they will kill her daughter.

Simone’s husband, still in the UK, says call the police anyway. He is concerned about her and their daughter. Simone is afraid, so very afraid the kidnappers will kill Lucy.

The story weaves in ways I had not expected. I had my suspects. The only one I trusted was Simone. The mother with a deep love for her daughter.

Oh, and I must admit, loved the 1-800 Call Sam character. He added so much.

The ending is superb, so unexpected.

The reviews show that readers either love or hate this story. As for me, I truly loved it. Because of the well developed deep theme.

Highly recommend

I couldn’t put this one down. David Ellis crafts a complex storyline that some reviewers, no doubt, will say they knew who dunit before the ending. And guess what? That’s okay because this is suspense, not a true mystery. This story dives into the brilliant method the crime was committed. Soooo many layers. Every possible detail covered. No one could say... well, what about... because that, too, was planned.

The next beautiful writing is the character composition. Oh my word. These were ordinary people with ordinary lives that had not-ordinary things happen. There were no serial killers. No snipers. Readers can’t help but feel for Simon and Vicky. And yes, he should be given the professor position!

Wow. So well crafted. So many twists but everyone logical, believable, and masterfully crafted.

You might ask, so what is the summary? To tell is to spoil. I can say the setting is Chicago, involves a huge trust fund and a man who falls in love with a poor woman.

Highly Recommend.
