The result of a 1 AM browse on Google Flights: a last minute trip to catch up with a friend & experience Greek summer in Chios + a little bit of Samos 🧿

mallorca with mom 🌀 what a beautiful, magical island. I could happily spend the whole summer on one of these beaches alongside my mom, 500 snacks, and my watercolor paints.

Some recommendations:
* Favorite beaches, pictured here: Pollenço & Cala Mondragó
* Stayed in Port Soller, which was a nice location, and not overly crowded
* Rent a car! You’ll be able to explore the gorgeous, smaller beaches. Heads up: depending where you’re from, you probably need an international drivers permit to drive in Spain, but they’re super easy to get.
* Visit Déia, Valldemossa, and Sóller

I love when places aren’t what I expected, because (usually) it turns out even better. We thought we’d be spending our days in Palomino laying on the beach, swimming in the blue Caribbean. We quickly discovered the beach was significantly smaller than it used to be (there are photos in buses advertising a big sprawling beach, no clue when it disappeared), and the tumultuous brown waves were unswimmable. Instead, desperate to find respite from the heat and a place to work on our tans, we spent our days in the freshwater river just a 10 minute walk from town.

Once I got over my paranoia of crocodiles (we didn’t see any, and everyone we asked said they don’t have them), our twice-daily dips in the river became the highlight of my day. We rarely saw other people in our part of the river, and when we did, it was usually local families swimming or gathering water.

The town is small but not sleepy— a few dirt roads lined with restaurants, shops, hostels, and cafes. Live music most evenings. A hippy and backpackery vibe, but locals too.

It wasn’t what I expected, but I loved it and wish I could end every work day with a sunset river dip 🌿

PS - to clarify # 13, Jocelyn told me cows like jazz. Research inconclusive.

Each year, I like to set a word/intention and a color for the year to come. Last year’s were JOY and YELLOW, and I’d say 2024 definitely lived up to both 🌞✨

I prioritized doing things that made me happy (no matter how random, silly, or simple). I spent so much time outside. I meditated more. I climbed a volcano. I went on a lot of first dates (not much to report here, but maybe some funny stories hehe). I took a million photos. And, after years of dreaming about it, I officially made my move to Lisbon!

Putting roots down was something I’d been craving but equally scared me. I wondered how it would feel to sign a lease and commit to one place, when the version of me I’ve known and loved these past few years thrived on the freedom of wandering. Instead, I’ve found so much excitement, comfort, and challenge in building my life somewhere new. And now I can finally collect mugs, books, and plants!!

But the biggest theme of my year ended up being connection. My heart is full to the brim with gratitude for the people who made this year so special. From quality time with my family and oldest friends, to reconnecting with friends I’ve collected over the years, to hosting visitors in my new home, and building new friendships in Lisbon– I may have moved to a new continent, but I truly never felt lonely.

(Somehow, summer has slipped away and this has been sitting in my drafts since July) Naxos was a dream 🧿We were looking for an island that’s easily accessible by ferry from Athens—somewhere not too touristy but not too quiet—and Naxos was exactly that. I definitely recommend a visit to Saint Anna’s winery, renting a car to explore the charming villages in the middle of the island, and indulging in all the tzatziki, gyros, and Greek salads between swims in the Aegean sea.

One of my favorite hostels EVER! As a solo traveler, I really love staying in hostels because they’re one of the easiest ways to meet people & are generally affordable. However, as a 30 year old solo female traveler who works remotely, doesn’t drink much these days, and neeeeds a decent nights sleep to function, I’m definitely a lot pickier about which hostels I stay in. But the great thing is, there are plenty that have the kind of environment and fellow travelers I’m looking for. Barbara’s Boutique Hostel in Antigua is such a gem and I would love to go back!

I have so many good things to say about this hostel, but here’s a few:
✨ Beautiful rooftop view
✨ Daily breakfast & afternoon cake
✨ Calm atmosphere with games, a bookshelf, lots of places to sit & relax or get work done
✨ The most well-equipped hostel kitchen I’ve ever seen
✨ Comfortable beds with all the hostel dorm essentials

If you’re visiting Antigua, you have to stop by @caobafarms! Just a short walk or drive from central Antigua, Caoba is the perfect place to spend an afternoon surrounded by beautiful gardens and a community atmosphere 🌿

It has a delicious farm to table restaurant, weekly activities like yoga and live music, farm tours (they have animals too), a butterfly sanctuary, farmers market, and more. If I lived in Antigua, I would be there everyyyy single week!
