I’m back at it! I’ll be running a Spiral Body Techniques® (SBT) class on Tuesdays at 11am this Fall. I’d love to see you there! @mollyshanahanmadshak @molshanahan Details and registration link in bio!

Where: Mascher Space Cooperative, 1170 S. Broad St. Philadelphia Pa (Rear Studio) @mascher.space

When: Tuesdays from 11:00am-12:30pm October 6 through December 15. Drop ins Welcome

Cost and Level: Sliding scale: $15-$20; No one turned away for lack of funds. Venmo and Cash accepted. These classes are intended for intermediate and advanced contemporary dancers, with all levels welcome to participate, making mindful adjustments to suit their abilities.

Spiral Body Techniques® (SBT) classes emphasize increasing whole-self dancing, articulation and coordinated availability of the ball-and-socket joints, and moving with a dynamic center through the release and reengagement of musculature.

We will begin on the floor with guided explorations of fundamental SBT concepts, taking time for repetition, momentum, and clarity to build. We will gradually work toward standing and larger movement. The class will end by weaving the exercises and discoveries together into a longer phrase.

All phrasework in SBT is spontaneously composed, so both the teacher and the student are practicing learning the phrase at the same time, generating repeatable phrases of increasing complexity with an emphasis on building trust in body intelligence more than “getting the steps right.” Long sleeves, layers and/or knee pads recommended.

Spiral Body Techniques® (SBT) is the dance and movement framework developed by choreographer Molly Shanahan. The Fall SBT® class series at Mascher will be taught by Kalila Kingsford Smith, a certified Essential Level SBT teacher. by @mascher.space

Show announcement!

Join Katherine Stark, long time Mascher member, Chloe Marie mascher staff and other deep dance community members in:
Flood, begin again
Immerse yourself in the real and imaginative effort necessary to ride and become the waters. This dance performance transforms the Fairmount Water Works’ former Kelly Pool into a site of regeneration, a fantastical riverbed, and portal to new beginnings.

In Flood, begin again dance artists Amalia Colón-Nava, Chloe Marie, Harlee Trautman, Katherine Kiefer Stark, Marcie Mamura, and Meredith Stapleton along with composer Andy Thierauf and lighting designer Harbour Edney, bring audiences on an immersive journey that compels us to consider our shared stewardship of water, place, and each other.

Six dancers propel, cascade, and ebb through the textural landscapes of concrete, river, sound, and lighting that flood the pool and offer uncomfortable, humorous, and risky possibilities.

Watch us harness our collective effort to navigate real and imagined currents, take risks, sink and swim together. At times resisting and at times striving to soften into our fragility, we search for shared horizons, at least one thing we can see, believe in, orient ourselves toward, and, in the right moment, turn it upside down and begin again.

In these two classes we will draw upon our knowledge of rivers and flow to explore how the spontaneous movement of water can generate buoyancy and suspension in our bodies, enabling us to welcome diversions and opportunities to be thrown off course.

We will use principles of changing direction, dissolving impact, and disorientation to practice ways of connecting with the attention and bodies of others. This class will involve a series of scores that intend to build comfortability with subtle lifts, merging centers, and is intended for dancers of all levels.

***

Miranda Busansky is a wanderer, imperfectionist, and queer multi-disciplinary artist interested in the off-centered experiences of clay, bodies, and identities. With a background in ceramics, Aikido, and contact improvisation, they are interested in how practices of improvisation and sharing attention can facilitate capitalist intervention and deepen our sense of individual and collective autonomy. Miranda is currently a Philadelphia resident completing a masters of social work at UPenn, and has performed and taught dance around Western Mass and New York for the past few years at the School of Contemporary Dance and Thought (MA), Lightforms Art Center (NY), WildHeart Performance Center(NY), amongst other spaces. by @mascher.space

To those who don’t know me,
I’m a Philly based dance artist, choreographer, and filmmaker. I got my BFA in Dance under the direction of Donna Faye Burchfield from Bennington College. I also studied for 2.5 years as a film minor at the University of the Arts in Philly.

Since graduating in December 2024, I’ve performed in many shows (@justsolesdt | @chaworthdance | H-O-T series) and filmed several projects for artists/companies which you can find in my “filmwork” highlight underneath my bio.

Last year for the first time, I held a weekly morning training session for dancers @mascher.space

I’ve loved being a part of these communities the past 6 years. Thank you to all those that have taken me in and for the people in my life that have reached back out. I’m looking forward to what the future has in store.
