each of these photos were taken during a particularly interesting and intense period of my life, well over ten years ago as i was traveling for work around the globe

there’s not much of a theme to them other than the black and white choice

it’s difficult for me to find artistic context for them but i would genuinely love for you to turn up your screen brightness, scroll through and let me know which of them is your favorite and why

nirvana, soundgarden, built to spill, nada surf, death cab for cutie, postal service, fleet foxes, decemberists….

by complete coincidence, last evening i stumbled upon the tiny, unassuming recording studio where these bands and more recorded some of their most important music

its a tiny little building in seattle—i was in the neighborhood and just wanted to see the outside but when i walked up to take a picture, the side door you can see here on the first photo was open and there were a couple people working outside

when i asked if i could peek in the door, the person who turned out to be one of the owners of the studio immediately said “let me show you around” and proceeded to walk us inside and show the entire(albeit very tiny and cozy) space, giving the history and current state of things in the studio —> swipe to see the inside

one of the things this co-owner told me was how even with the amazing history and provenance of the studio, it can be difficult to keep the space going and expressed its importance to the local scene and the larger studio community

i couldn’t believe that this legendary, historic space can be rented for only $350 a day 🤯

if you find yourself looking to record in a legendary studio, with an amazing analog board to two inch tape, go check out the Hall of Justice recording studio in seattle
