Masorti Olami advances the principles of traditional modern Masorti Judaism and strengthens Jewish life in AmLat, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia

POSTS STORIES REELS

When young leaders have the opportunity to learn together, share experiences, and build connections across borders, they bring that experience back to their communities. From October 14–18, the @noam_olami International Conference brought 36 Masorti/Conservative youth leaders from around the world to Israel for five days of learning, training workshops, meaningful encounters, and shared reflection.

From the Dead Sea to Jerusalem, participants explored Jewish history, peoplehood, and their relationship with Israel. They met with Masorti/Conservative movement leaders, exchanged perspectives, and considered how they can create change within their own communities. Shared tefilot and Kabbalat Shabbat at the Kotel brought another dimension to the experience, connecting learning with Jewish life and practice.

The conference also created space for leaders to learn from one another. Each NOAM branch has its own local context, experiences, and challenges. Bringing these perspectives together gives participants new ideas for their work and a network of peers who can offer support long after they return home.

These connections matter for the future of our communities and the global movement. Young people are already shaping Jewish life through their leadership. Giving them opportunities to deepen their knowledge, develop their ideas, and collaborate across continents helps sustain communities where future generations can find belonging and take an active role.

At Masorti Olami, we are proud of the dedication, creativity, and sense of responsibility these young leaders bring to our movement, and remain committed to supporting and prioritizing the growth of our youth network!

Our thanks to the NOAM Olami team, educators, and partners who made this gathering possible, and to every participant bringing its learning and connections back to their community, strengthening the ties that unite our global movement.

Thirty members of our Masorti/Conservative communities in Ukraine just completed a 10 day trip to Israel for a mission focused on Holocaust education, shared learning, and connections across our movement.

Organized by Midreshet Schechter Ukraine (@schechterinstitutes), the mission brought together educators, community leaders, and young leaders from Kyiv, Chernivtsi, Odesa, and Kharkiv. Their journey included learning at Yad Vashem, meetings at Schechter, meeting with our movement’s leadership, and sharing Shabbat with the Masorti/Conservative community at Kibbutz Hannaton.

Masorti Olami Interim CEO @tpot729 met with the group, speaking about their place within our global Masorti/Conservative movement and the support connecting our communities across borders.

She was particularly moved by their determination to learn and strengthen Jewish life at home, despite the difficult conditions they face. “They’re just thirsty to learn more and take back skills and information so that they can continue building communities. And it’s really motivating and inspirational.”

The group also met with @tamgott, Director of @maromolami; Dr. Yizhar Hess, MERCAZ Olami Executive Vice President and WZO Vice Chair; and Nilli Glick Asaf, MERCAZ’s Secretary General.

Kol hakavod to Midreshet Schechter Ukraine for making this mission possible, and we look forward to deepening our partnership and work in Ukraine together!

@synagoguemaayaneor, our Masorti/Conservative community in Nice, France, celebrated its 30th anniversary, bringing the community together for an afternoon of music, shared memories, and celebration. @masortieurope President Wanda Teplitsky was privileged to join the festivities to mark this milestone, and speak to the members about the organization and the impact communities like Maayne Or have on the entire region.

Since 1996, Maayane Or (literally meaning ‘Source of Light’) has built a welcoming home for Masorti Jewish life on the Côte d’Azur. Its commitment to egalitarian prayer, Jewish learning, connection to Israel, and care for one another brings people together across generations, with its educational programs for children and @noam_maayaneor youth activities helping young people shape the community’s future.

At a time of violence and uncertainty in France, this gathering also speaks to the strength and resilience of Jewish communities across France and Europe. Continuing to gather, learn, and celebrate Jewish life together is a powerful expression of that strength.

Over the years, Masorti Olami’s leadership has had the joy of visiting Maayane Or on several occasions, experiencing its warmth firsthand and strengthening our collaboration. We are grateful for this relationship and look forward to continuing to support and build Masorti Jewish life together

Mazal tov to President Franck Médioni, Rabbi @touboul.david, and all the leaders, educators, volunteers, and families whose dedication has sustained the community for three decades. May Maayane Or continue to be a source of light for generations to come!

Congratulations to @aviv_community, our Masorti/Conservative community in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, on the premiere of “88 Closed Doors,” their documentary uncovering the history of the city’s synagogues and the Jewish life that once flourished within them.

Premiered on October 11, the film explores the history of Chernivtsi’s synagogues across the Austro-Hungarian, Romanian, and Soviet periods. Through years of research into thousands of archival documents, photographs, newspapers, and personal testimonies, the team recovered stories of buildings that once housed synagogues, Jewish organizations, and vibrant community life.

The premiere took place in the former Tempel synagogue, now the Chernivtsi Cinema, on the anniversary of the establishment of the city’s Jewish ghetto, a setting and date that gave the screening particular significance.

This project builds on Kehillat Aviv’s first documentary, “From War to Spring,” which told the story of the community during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and its efforts to sustain warmth, mutual support, and faith through those darkest times.

By documenting both their community’s experiences and the city’s Jewish heritage, Kehillat Aviv is taking an active role in telling its own story. This work can strengthen Jewish identity and education in the region, helping younger generations connect with their heritage and see themselves as participants in its future. Across our global Masorti/Conservative movement, it offers a meaningful example of a community creating resources that preserve memory, nurture belonging, and support Jewish continuity.

Mazal Tov to the community and the team behind the film! @levkleiman, who conceived and produced it; screenwriter and director @sergeyvalov1988, and researcher Stanislava Zhutovskaya.

This year’s @masortiamlat Board Meeting brought together 16 board members and professionals from nine countries in Oranjestad, Aruba, from October 9–13. Hosted by Beth Israel Synagogue, and led by Masorti AmLat President, Denise Alterwain, the gathering focused on strengthening regional collaboration and shaping the work and strategic direction ahead for 2027.

It was the board’s first meeting with Yael Berman in her role as Director of the Latin American Region. Masorti Olami Interim CEO @tpot729 also participated, giving a special presentation introducing the organizational structure, how we work around the world, and the professional team at Masorti Olami’s Jerusalem office and their work.

Gatherings like this give leaders time to learn from one another, agree on priorities, and turn shared ideas into coordinated action. “I especially highlight the commitment of the members of the Board,” said Yael, emphasizing the value of open dialogue and creating spaces for reflection and joint planning.

Community life was also at the heart of the gathering. Participants shared Shabbat with Beth Israel and marked its close with Havdalah by the sea with Rabbi Baruj Zeilicovich. An especially moving moment came when the children of the Shiri Kef project received a surprise visit from their teacher, Martín Nisnevich, who traveled from Buenos Aires at the community’s invitation. Having worked with him over zoom since the beginning of the year, the children welcomed him with excitement and wonder.

With 86 communities across 14 countries, Masorti AmLat is Masorti Olami’s largest regional network. We are proud to see it continue to grow and develop through the dedication of its leaders and professionals. Their work strengthens Jewish life across Latin America, helping communities support one another and contribute to our global Masorti/Conservative movement.

The graduation of seven female physicians as mohalot (ritual circumcisers) marks a historic milestone for the Masorti/Conservative movement, both in Israel and around the world, by expanding the possibilities for female religious leadership and broadening what future generations can envision for themselves within the Jewish tradition.

The graduates completed the inaugural cohort of @masorti_movement’s Project Tziporah, receiving certification to perform brit milah (Jewish ritual circumcision). Their ceremony, held last week at the @fuchsbergcenter in Jerusalem, celebrated the culmination of a comprehensive program combining halakhic study and medical expertise.

Masorti Olami warmly congratulates Dr. Nili Gutoter, Dr. Reut Harel, Dr. Shirel Damari Yosefi, Dr. Susan Wurzdor, Dr. Eti Brauda, Dr. Michal Cooper, and Rabbi Dr. Analia Bortz, together with Masorti Movement in Israel and everyone who helped bring this pioneering initiative to life.

Named after Tziporah, the biblical figure who circumcised her son, the project draws on Jewish tradition to open new paths in its practice today. For communities in the Diaspora, it offers a concrete example of how commitment to halakhah and broader participation in ritual life can advance together, inspiring conversations and possibilities far beyond Israel.

@rakefetginsberg, former CEO of the Masorti Movement in Israel, who initiated the Tziporah Project, and Rabbi Doron Rubin, the movement’s current CEO, took part in the ceremony. Our Interim CEO, @tpot729, attended representing Masorti Olami, alongside @tamgott, Director of @maromolami, Rabbi Jacob Blumenthal, CEO of the @rabbinicalassembly, and other representatives of the global Masorti/Conservative movement.

On the first day of @noam_olami’s International Conference, held last week in Israel, the interactive session “Meet the Masorti Movement” brought young leaders into conversation with representatives of four organizations working across the global Masorti/Conservative movement.

Moving between four stations, participants met @tpot729, Masorti Olami Interim CEO; Rabbi Doron Rubin, CEO of the @masorti_movement; @tamgott, @maromolami Director; and Nilli Glick Asaf, MERCAZ Olami Secretary General. After hearing about each organization’s work, and how it relates to NOAM leaders around the world, participants came together for a joint Q&A with all four representatives.

Opportunities like this help young leaders understand how the organizations’ work connects and explore possibilities for collaboration. They also strengthen leadership development by broadening participants’ perspectives beyond their own communities and building relationships that can support their future roles within NOAM and the wider movement.

The conference brought together 36 NOAM leaders from nine countries under the theme “From the Inside Out: A NOAM Olami Journey.” More from their time together coming soon!

Members of our Abayudaya communities in Uganda have completed the first ever three-month online Torah chanting course which was developed by the European Academy for Jewish Liturgy together with the experience and support of Masorti Olami.

Led by Hazzan Michael Stein, the weekly sessions introduced participants to the Ta’amei HaMikra (trope) system and helped them improve their Hebrew pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. They also worked on chanting the opening of Bereshit, with the final class taking place shortly before the High Holidays.

Through this course, more members of the Abayudaya communities now have the skills to serve as ba’alei k’riah (Torah readers). This creates more opportunities to take part in leading community prayer, share their learning with others, and help carry the tradition of Torah reading from one generation to the next.

Kol hakavod to everyone who completed the course for their dedication, and to Hazzan Michael Stein and EAJL for their guidance throughout!

Today, on Israel’s National Day of Remembrance for the October 7 Disaster, observed on 24 Tishrei, we remember those murdered, those taken hostage, and all whose lives were forever changed. We hold their families, loved ones, and all who continue to bear the pain of that day in our hearts. As we approach the third anniversary of the attacks, we mark this memorial day for the first time with no hostages remaining in Gaza.

The wounds of October 7 remain present in Israel, throughout Jewish communities around the world, and in the lives of countless individuals and families. Even amid these challenges, our Masorti/Conservative communities and Jews around the world continue the sacred work of caring for one another and sustaining Jewish life through prayer, learning, and acts of compassion.

Masorti Olami stands alongside these communities, supporting local leaders and strengthening relationships across countries. Unity requires effort: it grows through the support we extend to one another and our shared commitment to a Jewish future.

As we remember those we lost, we renew our dedication to that work. May their memory inspire us to strengthen our communities, deepen our connections, and build a future rooted in resilience, responsibility, and hope.

May their memories be a blessing.

As we hold the four species (Arba’ah Minim) on Sukkot, the Etrog (Citron), Lulav (Palm Branch), Hadass (Myrtle), and Aravah (Willow) remind us that every person and community brings something essential to our global Masorti/Conservative movement. That belief guides our work at Masorti Olami: supporting communities in their own contexts and strengthening the ties between them.

Chag Sukkot Sameach to our communities and friends around the world!
