The Jamel Shabazz, SPHERE and AI’s Tower Records NO MUSIC, NO LIFE Poster (2002)

In 2002, legendary New York photographer Jamel Shabazz came to Tokyo for a Tower Records NO MUSIC, NO LIFE campaign alongside rapper SPHERE of INFLUENCE and a young AI. Shabazz’s photo book Back in the Days had introduced a wider audience to the style and everyday life of Brooklyn’s streets during the early 1980s, and the Tokyo shoot deliberately brought some of that old school energy into Harajuku. With adidas supporting Back in the Days, SPHERE changed into a tracksuit that the production diary compared to early LL Cool J, while the crew brought along an enormous boombox to complete the atmosphere.

Photographer Itaru Hirama was originally shooting the campaign, but once everyone stepped outside his studio, Shabazz instinctively started taking photographs himself. He directed SPHERE and AI through the backstreets of Harajuku, positioning them on walls, around motorcycles and beside the boombox while Hirama photographed the same scenes from another angle. At one point Shabazz reportedly asked the crew for money, gathering ¥10,000 notes to use as props as pedestrians began surrounding the increasingly chaotic shoot. The group eventually moved to the gardens of Togo Kinenkan, but even after the official poster photography finished, Shabazz kept shooting, reportedly pulling ordinary people nearby into his photographs.

INFLUENCE OF LUXURY for 411 Motoring [2004]

Japanese Hip-Hop Artist SPHERE of INFLUENCE had the pleasure of unveiling the luxury focused Cadillac Escalade EXT, for the first time.

A major point is that the Escalade was not just a stock Cadillac. The article is showing off the extensive customization and the amount of work that went into making it a unique show style vehicle.

The interior combines an elaborate custom paint job with airbrush painting, something the article describes as particularly rare in Japan, and the interior itself is described as being on another level.

ALSO PEEP SLIDE 4 & 5 with the Spider-Man Graphic!!

The sound system was created by Obayashi Factory, one of the brands Japan can be proud of. The streamlined design is already insane, but the speaker enclosure covering the six woofers is finished in a wood construction, with particular attention paid to the materials. by @masterofinfluence
