As an artist, you need to decide what success looks like for you.

It might be making your first sale to a complete stranger.
It might be gallery representation.
It might be building a career as an artist.

But it also might be creating out of a deep well of joy, finding your style, or pursuing your passion wholeheartedly for the first time, wherever it may lead.

PLEASE, for the sake of yourself, your art, and the world who needs to see it, do not define success by looking outwards.

Look inwards.

Success for you is as unique as you are.

Are you making this mistake when you’re choosing a mentor?

A lot of artists tend to look for mentors who paint or create like them. But let me tell you something that will blow your mind…that might be the least important factor.

I have worked with many of our mentors, those whose artwork is similar to mine (acrylic landscapes) and those whose work has NOTHING IN COMMON with mine (encaustic abstracts and sculpture). I learned so much with all of these mentors.

But the mentors who were able to PUSH me the furthest are the ones whose work was NOTHING like mine. Surprised? I was too.

Ultimately, our “job” as artists is to find our own VOICE which is reflected in our style, color palette, subject matter, medium, narrative, brushwork - in every decision we make. No one else in the world can create like you.

No one has the same VOICE as you, so don’t look for a mentor who does…because they don’t exist.

Look for a mentor who can help you uncover and embrace the way YOU ARE MEANT TO CREATE.

Does an old voice keep telling you you’re not good enough? Your art journal can be a place to answer back.

Start by writing down your self-critical thoughts. Consider where they came from, then rewrite each one as a kinder “I” statement.

Next, turn the critic’s words into art. Write them large across a journal page, then look at them as lines and shapes—not a message. Draw from those shapes and paint until the words are hidden in something new. When doubt returns, try another page.

Save this for the next time your inner critic shows up in the studio.

Earning from your art in just one or two ways? More options can help, but the goal isn’t to do everything. It’s to find what fits you and your work.

Start by separating what you sell (originals, prints, licensing, teaching) from where you sell it (your website, a gallery, an open studio, a festival). Before adding something new, look for another way to sell what you already make.

Considering a new income stream? Ask who it’s for, whether the numbers work, and how it supports the art you want to make. Talk with artists who’ve done it before you commit.

Your values can look solid and the painting can still feel flat. Soft and lost edges give the eye somewhere to rest, hard edges pull attention. Use them on purpose.

In oil, choose hard edges near what matters, soften what should fall back, and let some edges disappear in shadow or atmosphere. Try the small study on slide 7 and squint to check where your eye lands.
