Loved getting to work on Matariki Matarau, a series directed by @tekurudewes for @matahimedia following tauiwi (non-Māori) and their reo Māori journeys. My first time DOPing a whole series and so grateful it was this one, obviously a series right up my alley.

Some of our talent I knew beforehand but some I didn’t, and it was so heartwarming to see just how many people are participating in reo Māori meet-ups and waiata clubs and classes all across the motu, the momentum for change is truly amazing to see, compared to even 10 years ago.

I loved that each of our kaikōrero spoke of not only their love of te reo Māori but how important it was to them as tauiwi to support broader movements for mana motuhake and tino rangatiratanga, that learning the language cannot be divorced from supporting the bigger fight for Māori rights and sovereignty.

E ngākau rorotu ana i te kite i tēnei, i te āpōpōtanga o Aotearoa. This is the future of Aotearoa and I love how it’s becoming more and more normalised.

Ka nui hoki ngā mihi to our crew, esp. to @keeti_melbourne for the behind-the-scenes wrangling, @tuneinwithnat for combing through what I’m sure was way too much footage, and of course to @tekurudewes for pulling off all the producing and directing mahi in just a few months to get it all to air in time for Matariki, tēnā rawa atu koe i tō whakapeto ngoi, i tō tono hoki kia mahi tahi anō tāua 🫶🏼

Matariki Matarau ✨ Cinzia Jonathan is now fluent in Te Reo after making a commitment to learn by whatever means available - through online courses, reading resources and progressing to learning in-person in a classroom environment.

Not stopping there, Cinzia has integrated into the hapū of Ngāti Pikiao parter, Mike. In addition to being a māmā reo Māori to their daughter, she is a regular kairaranga and kaiāwhina at the marae.
