“ Portrait of a Swan”

I’m an artist and visual storyteller, residing in Cape Town, South Africa. I have loved to draw and create all of my life. It is where I feel my most happy version of myself, escaping into my own little world. It is also where I feel my most vulnerable, sharing such a personal part of myself.

This year has brought on many changes that led me to a cross road. “What path do I want to take that will lead to my happiness?” Is what I asked myself. Pursuing my art was the resounding answer reverberating in my mind. The thought of not giving myself the chance to embrace it felt more terrifying than actually doing it.

I have been exploring the process of working with aluminium craft metal. It is slow and steady, labour intensive work. The swan being one of my childhood muses was my subject matter of choice to test out in this material. Once my drawing is complete, I hand emboss, cut and glue each piece together. The result has been enchanting and I will be continuing to explore this art form.

This is my new chapter and I’m excited to see and experience it unfold. Starting something always feels daunting, but I hope to look back a year from now and appreciate my progress and growth. 🦢

Portrait of a Swan
—————————-

As a child I remember having a fascination with swans. Swans captivated my imagination with the storybooks and films that I became accustomed to.

I loved going to feed them breadcrumbs at a pond at my favourite nursery just down the road from where we lived. The pond was shaded from the sun with grand old oak trees and was surrounded by a small white picket fence with a gate. You could hear the bevy of swans, geese and ducks cooing away before you saw them. When you entered through the gate, you would instantly be surrounded by these large birds eagerly awaiting the forthcoming breadcrumbs. I loved every moment of it.

The ducks were friendly with their little tails wagging. The geese I had to watch out for. They were moody and nipped at your toes and hissed at you. The swans kept their distance almost never coming out of the water to greet you. It only made me want to get closer to the them.

I admired their beauty from afar; their feathers; grand and large, perfectly placed and as white as snow, their slender tapered neck, arching in elegant loops, the way they moved; so conscious and gentle, gliding through the water creating ripples of concentric circles. They would avoid you, gliding further away the closer you came. Every now and then if you were lucky, one of them would stretch out their exquisite wings. I thought to myself; “What a magnificent creature”.

As an adult I still have a love and fascination with swans. It felt fitting for one of my first large art pieces to serve as an ode to the Swan. 🦢

I’m incredibly honoured to have been able to paint a @shellegance shell along with 52 other artists that are part of Lucie’s exceptional fundraiser
for @iamwater_foundation 💙

All 53 shells will be auctioned to the highest bidder.
The auction will go live on the Shellegance website at 7pm on Tuesday the 6th of October and closes at 5pm on Sunday the 11th of October. (I’ll share the link soon.)
Proceeds from this auction will go to the work of getting more young South Africans to experience their ocean through @iamwater_foundation 💙

You know me and how I love my swans. I had such fun painting these swans at Lucie’s “Crafternoon” sessions. 🥰🦢

LE POISSEN

In many cultures, fish symbolize good fortune, abundance, prosperity, and fertility.🐟

Seeing as I am a Pisces, fish have always been a symbol I take note of.

I was inspired by the beautiful 19th century antique Austrian Silver Fish Spice Boxes and the Silvered Metal Articulated Models of Fish, to create my own little collection.

Custom Orders

I’m sharing my process of a custom order I made earlier in the year that I absolutely loved. A celestial themed mobile with hand embossed pieces hand cut out of aluminium metal. This mobile was a bridal shower gift with the bride-to-be represented by the sun in the center of the mobile, with each friend represented by a symbol surrounding the sun. I made the mobile easy to assemble and take apart to pack away. I hand drew all of the little guides, tissue paper and even the box illustration to give it a personal touch. A special “Easter Egg” is each women’s unique hand writing that I embossed into the metal with their name and a word of affirmation. Little details like this add value and meaning to an already unique gift.

I would love the opportunity to create more special pieces like this for you. 🥰💫

Tortoise Shell 01

I was gifted a tiny tortoise shell last year. On closer inspection, I noticed that the lines on the shell looked like human fingerprints. After a deep dive into archives of historical antique illustrations and photographs, it seems that this was indeed the case. Each tortoise shell is unique, just like a finger print. Every time I hand emboss one of my tortoise shell illustrations onto metal, it forms it’s own unique pattern. This means each artwork I create mimics the individuality of a tortoise’s shell in nature. I love that connection.

This is just a glimpse into my process from start to finish of my hand embossed aluminium metal tortoise shell in bronze that is available for purchase framed or unframed at @pezulainteriors . The aluminium metal I use has a beautiful reflective quality to it and will change in colouration through the day and night depending on the light.

I can’t wait to see this piece in someone’s home. 🖤

P E Z U L A I N T E R I O R S

I am beyond excited to announce that a collection of my hand embossed metal artwork is available at @pezulainteriors

This is a milestone moment for me and I’m so appreciative of Steven and Camilla’s support and encouragement.

I have created a special range that will only be available at Pezula Interiors, so if you like what you see, pop-in to their store. 🥰

The natural world is my inspiration and I looked at real tortoise shells and seashells to create these pieces.

Each piece is hand embossed in aluminium metal, hand cut and carefully glued onto fine quality paper. I chose to frame these pieces in different shades of gold and bronze to elevate the metal. My metal work has a reflective quality that changes throughout the day and night depending on the light. No two pieces are the same, as each time I hand emboss and cut a piece, it will be as unique as a fingerprint. Each piece is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

This is just the first collection of work, and there is a lot more to come. Stay tuned. 💫
