Each artwork is created by one of us, whilst the overall installation is the fruit of our collaboration. We see the exhibition as a temporary coalescence that constitutes a single work in itself

The works presented here span a range of material approaches, united by a shared exploration of the nature of consciousness.
Central to our practices is the understanding that making matters not because it produces objects, but because it changes the conditions of perception. In this sense, perception itself becomes a creative act

***

Sharing here a selection from some of the new pieces I made using magnetism and gravity in the run-up to Phénomènes with @corinelemieuxx showing now @centre_dartistes_agregat

For me these objects inhabit a space that’s somewhere between sculpture and drawing - kitchen table physics thinking about some of the unseen but ever-present forces that shape our experience of reality

The 5 pieces documented here are:

Just saw the first of @rpjnicholson two-part documentary 100: All Things to All People that draws from archival footage and audio recordings from the mid nineteen-twenties when the Elmhirsts transformed Dartington Hall (Devon,UK) into a cultural project that seems radical even today. A holistic approach to human wellness grounded in the understanding that happiness ensues when each human has the means to express themselves creatively. Influenced by and involving some of the greatest teachers and creative minds in the world at the time, this philosophy led to radically experimental performing and visual arts, educational models and sustainable land-based industries that kept the surrounding villages in work in a time of mass rural unemployment

I’m super-excited to be part of that ongoing tradition as I start work at @dartingtontrust on a new stone sculpture titled Biophilia, recently commissioned by @aspacearts for Hearth House, Southampton, UK

I last carved stone by hand on residency in South Africa @niroxfoundation in 2015. One stormy evening as I was starting work on the sculpture I made there (Changing My Mind (6)) flying ants (Eastern subterranean termites) suddenly congregated on the dolomitic boulder it was made from (4) then disappeared as fast as they’d come, leaving cast-wings over the boulder and floor (5). I’d just finished setting up my shelter over the block of Stoneshill Whitbed (1&2) that arrived from @albionstone in Portland yesterday, and the same thing happened again (3). For half an hour at sunset the block swarmed with winged ants. The entanglement of those two moments in time seems significant taken in South West Devon by @matchivers

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of working with the excellent team @infravert to install Genius Loci in its home. Sharing some post-install imagery here - light had nearly gone by the time we’d finished, so looking forward to getting it documented well soon

I visited the site for the first time in late summer nearly three years ago. I sat out on the land for a long time - listening, looking, absorbing. I felt the seed of the sculpture start to germinate. I visited the land in summer, autumn, winter and spring. I’ve met some of the many species who call it home. I knew I wanted to approach it as an ecosystem. In a simple solo ritual, I introduced myself to the land and described my intention - inviting the land to participate, to work through me. I feel the land has been generous - not only in terms of the way it has manifested in this work but also how it has been a catalyst for a new language of form that echoes in the work I’ve made since

Pleased to be able to share recent documentation of our exhibition that’s currently running in Canada at Centre d’artistes Agrégat. Phénomènes marks the first time we’ve shown our work together

We live and work between Tiohtià:ke/Montreal, Canada and rural Devon in the UK - our parallel practices evolving in dialogue with one another over time and space. Our way of working is simultaneous and meaningfully entangled - each influenced by the exploration of the other. The exhibition title comes from the Greek phainomenon - the point at which something appears, and through our perceiving it, enters into experience
