Restaurante with taste. No. 02 — Maleza, Mexico City. (@maleza.cdmx)

You feel Maleza before you order anything. The plants doing their own quiet work. The stone. The wood. The way the light softens as the evening arrives. Every detail feels grown, not installed.
The best hospitality brands set a mood you can’t unfeel.
Adding Maleza to the running list of cafés, restaurants, hotels, any spot with a point of view!

Spaces with taste. No. 09 - Lotti, Mexico City (@lotti_restaurante)

Exposed timber ceilings, white tablecloths, sculptural metal tables, and a bar layered with dark wood, bottles, and copper. At Lotti, the details shift from room to room, balancing a light, understated dining space with a warmer, more intimate bar.

When I look at a hospitality space, I’m interested in these contrasts. The rhythm of the ceiling beams, the softness of linen against the rawness of wood, the reflective metal bases, and the way the bar introduces deeper tones and textures. Each material brings a different quality to the room, but nothing feels disconnected.

That’s the part I bring back to the studio: understanding how materiality, lighting, and furniture choices shape the experience of a space. How a change in texture or tone can create a different atmosphere while still feeling part of the same identity.

Adding Lotti to the running list.

Some color pairings keep finding their way into the rooms I save: red with pink, green with blue, black with blue.

I’m drawn to how differently they hold a space. Pink softens a deep red, green gives blue a quieter warmth, and black adds weight to a blue room.

The materials matter, too. The same color feels different in velvet, painted timber, or plaster; the finish changes how it catches the light and sits beside everything else.

Cafés with taste. No. 01 - Marne, Mexico City. (@marne.rest)

The kind of café you walk into and immediately understand what they care about. Textured walls. Warm wood. Ceramics that clearly weren’t chosen from a catalog. Light doing most of the work. Nothing shouting for attention, and somehow the whole place is impossible to leave.

This is what I mean when I say taste is the first thing a brand shows you. Long before the menu. Marne doesn’t need to tell you they care about design. Every surface already says it.

More in this series soon.

Spaces with taste. No. 08 - Suppli, Mexico City (@_suppli )

A warm, lantern-lit room where Roman street food meets Mexican hospitality. Rust-colored banquettes, dark wood tables, exposed brick, and that golden light that makes every plate look like it’s being passed to you across a kitchen.

When I look at a hospitality space, I’m interested in how its choices belong together. The furniture, the room, the smallest things on the table. What they tell you about the place before anyone has explained it.

That’s the part I bring back to the studio: thinking about how each decision contributes to the whole, and whether the identity holds when you look a little closer.

Adding Suppli to the running list.

Materials that give a room depth.

Stone, stainless steel, linen, natural jute, and wool. I’m drawn to how they balance each other: the coolness of metal beside softer fibers, the weave against a solid surface.

Even within a quiet palette, those differences give your eye somewhere to linger.

Spaces with taste. No. 05 — ISSI, Mexico City (@issi_rest).

You walk into ISSI and it feels like a room you already know.

Butter-yellow upholstery. Volcanic rock. Concrete and wood paneling that shouldn’t work together and somehow do. Every material feels chosen, not styled.

The whole restaurant is designed for intimacy. Cozy without being cluttered. Small enough that every detail matters and every detail clearly did.

This is what I mean when I say the best hospitality brands don’t decorate. They evoke. They borrow from the intimate places we already love. They let you feel like you’ve come home to somewhere you’ve never been.

Taste isn’t what you add. It’s what you refuse to reinvent.

Adding ISSI to the running list. The spaces I return to when I want to see hospitality done with a real point of view.

Tones and materials that work perfectly together:

Not tied to one style, one country, or one era. Just the rooms that keep pulling me back: warm wood, unbleached linen, welcoming tones, the light doing most of the work.

None of these rooms are mine. But they’re the ones I return to when I’m designing my own. The reference I check against when I want to remember what beauty looks like when nobody’s trying too hard.

Taste is the first thing a brand shows you. Long before the strategy or the pitch.

Spaces with taste. No. 07 - Casa Simera, Mexico City

The kind of house that whispers before you sit down. Curved plaster walls in soft, earthy tones. Clay tile floors that quiet the room. A four-story skylight pulling daylight through every level. And somewhere upstairs, a pilates studio, because a great space knows the day has more than one rhythm.

Casa Símera doesn’t just look calm. It makes you calm. That’s the difference between decorating a room and designing an experience.
This is what I mean when I say the best hospitality brands set a mood you can’t unfeel. Adding Casa Simera to the running list of cafés, restaurants, hotels, any spot with a point of view.

Spaces with taste. No. 06 - Tetetlán, Mexico City.

Originally the horse stables of Casa Pedregal, one of Luis Barragán’s most iconic homes. The space was restored by an art collector into a restaurant, café, library, and cultural center that honors every original decision Barragán made in 1948.

Glass floors that let you see the volcanic rock below. Pink rafters warmed by the same skylights he designed. Every surface preserved instead of updated.

This is what I mean when I say the best hospitality brands don’t decorate. They restore. They preserve. They understand that inherited beauty carries more weight than anything you could invent.
