From the opening at @rhizome_dc of 500 Miles Out: Carceral Ties Between The District and Central Appalachia earlier this year. You can now find this piece as a part of the Kin-Land show up at @artfarmcoop.

Because of the 500 mile radius of the proposed Letcher County prison, people in federal prison can get shipped out really fucking far away from home. Meaning if family or friends want to visit, it can take a lot of time and money for only a few hours of face time. Sometimes, to be turned away at the door. As my own proximity to the federal prison system has become closer, I’ve seen a gentlemen in front of me get turned away for wearing sweatpants after traveling and waiting for hours and hours. I almost got turned away for wearing shoes that weren’t listed as prohibited on the BOP website. One of many reasons the $500+ million that would go into the construction is a total waste.

Our 2 months of programming tied to Kin-Land kicks off this Sunday! Starting with an invasive plant removal workshop hosted at Seedleaf’s London Ferrill Community Garden. Folks will learn basic tips + tricks, common invasive species growing in the central KY region, and why this work is important within a broader context of colonialism. Plus time to practice and get to know fellow plant nerds ! 🌱

Caught wearing a quilted top I made for myself back in 2024. 🪡🪡🪡

In a time when I was in deep grief from my mom passing, I found a lot of comfort in the repetitive stitching and honestly just having something to pour myself into. I think of her every time I wear it. by @material.drifter

Last halloween @revel.for.the.fruits and I meet up in Richmond, VA to help with the beautiful madness of the All The Saints puppet parade. The day after it all, we stumbled into the local creative reuse center to find kite string handles and I’ve been aching to sew one ever since. I’ve slowly been working on this since April in between bigger projects and can proudly say…she flies! Forever a delight to play with the wind.

I was also struck by how much it reminded me of a soft shield once I had it on its frame. And as always, am thinking about a refusal to lose my sense of tender openness to the world through the process of self protection. How sweet it feels to fiercely have my own back. How much easier that has come with time.

I keep thinking about the ‘3 rules to live by’ Laurie Anderson shared in her recent performance at the Tatanka Owe Akupi’s Return of the Buffalo- ‘don’t be afraid of anybody. Get a really good bullshit detector- learn how to use it. Be really tender.’

Absolutely incred opening of Kin-Land! Thanks to all who came out. The show is up at @artfarmcoop now through November 22nd.

The whole process has been delicious and really just a lovely excuse to spend more time with the homies, celebrate the lands we tend, and share our practices of care + creation.

Wouldn’t have been possible without the many hands that guided it to big juicy fruition!

Some shout outs include:
ofc all the fellow artists- @quillandcompass, @cenizitas__ , @wildfireberries (who we missed dearly at the opening). @abolitionrex whose show ‘We Will Stop This Prison’ opened the same night.

This tending takes it time, as you cannot rush the seasons. And with their room to rest, I can feel it too. Our bodies bound together, wrapped in the echoes of our future.

Getting to spend time tending the forest with others has been something that has changed me over the years. I’ve finally finished this quilt about that work for the upcoming Kin-Land show opening this Saturday from 6-8pm at @artfarmcoop. Would love to see ya there!

This is the exact direction I feel excited about taking my quilting right now- There’s something special about continuously showing up in a practice of trying, and getting to see the fruits of that labour come to be. by @material.drifter

Magical week in the hills of North Carolina at @johnccampbellfolkschool . Could not have asked for a better crew. Between the creek trips, chestnut harvest, do si do’s, late night studio hangs with Enya and Kneecap, neighbor visits from quilt goddess Laurel, shared meals and so much more- our cups of abundance spilled over !

High key recommend folks take a class- the legacy of Appalachian tradition and handcraft here is wild and feels extra special in this time of A.I. They also have a pretty poppin scholarship program- one specifically for KY residents! by @material.drifter
