✨ Welcome to Maternal Matters ✨

💫A new role a new introduction 💫

Hi, I’m Abby Im just transitioning into a NHS Infant Feeding Midwife role. I have 3 children, I’m a birth advocate, breastfeeding supporter, and passionate believer that every family deserves informed choice, compassionate care, and evidence-based support throughout pregnancy, birth, and beyond.

With over 12 years of midwifery experience, I’ve supported hundreds of variations of birth, but was most experienced & skilled in water & home birth. I’ve dedicated my career to helping parents feel confident, empowered, and heard. Alongside my professional journey, I’ve experienced home birth myself, breastfed all three of my children, and continue to be involved in birth activism and maternal wellbeing.

This page is a space where I share honest conversations, birth education, breastfeeding support, advocacy, and the realities of motherhood — all with the aim of helping you feel informed, supported, and empowered as you navigate your own journey.
I love being part of a wider Instagram community of midwives, student midwives, doulas birth workers that all share the same ethos, you will see me sharing info & collaborating with many of these accounts.

I now move into a new role of infant feeding midwife, a big change for me no longer working directly with pregnant women & birthing people, it’s going to be a steep learning curve. I have a lot of experience with supporting breastfeeding but I have so much more to learn about infant feeding over all, and that excites me 💫✨

Thank you for being here. 🤍Abigail

My heart is full! ♥️ Just back from Manchester, where I finally got to meet my online midwifery bestie @maternal_matters before heading to @whitworthstillparents ‘Labour of Care’ exhibition for a juicy panel discussion with @lauragodfrey_isaacs @amanahbirthandbeyond @naidavina @holdingherspace @jenjenmason12 🙌

Special shoutout to our gorgeous @uber driver Semher who told us all about working hard as a single mum to send her son to uni, and our amazing @dishoommcr waitress Michaella who spoiled us rotten.

🖤Breastfeeding in public 🖤

🖤It’s still a thing that offends some people
🖤The whole point of this campaign by ⬇️

@wear_nala & @laura.henshaw

🖤Sorry not sorry
🖤But if you jump to the comments in the OG post
🖤Many people including women say put them away!

“Do it in private” “we don’t need to see this”

🖤I find it mind blowing, in 2026 we are still offended by babies being breastfed!
🖤And I applaud @wear_nala for their awesome ads!
🖤What’s your thoughts and experiences? ⬇️

I don’t usually post anything political, but I can’t stay quiet on this one.

Up to 20 maternity units in England may have to close, with centralisation being called “inevitable” for safe care. Is this really progress? Are we all going to sit back and let this happen?

I know many have fought this fight before, and it can feel like we get nowhere. But bigger, more centralised units are not the answer. We already have induction rates over 30%, women waiting days for a labour ward bed, and newly qualified midwives who can’t find jobs.

As Independent midwives we are fiercely protective of physiology and continuity of carer. We share our stats across the profession, and our outcomes show how well this model works. Of course we have caesarean and induction rates too. Sometimes both are necessary and life-saving, and we’re incredibly grateful for them. But across independent midwifery, 90% of our clients don’t choose to birth that way first.

📣 Calling students, midwives, families, MPs, and anyone who cares about birth and the future of maternity care. Join us for a screening of Allowed to Birth on Monday 16th November in Sheffield, followed by a panel Q&A with:

🩺 A consultant midwife
🌟 Award-winning midwife Amanda Burleigh,
🩶 Independent midwives
And most importantly, women whose voices are rarely heard or championed, sharing why the choice to birth their way mattered so much 🩶

⚡️SAFEGUARDING matters⚡️

⚡️The thing is I know I would have handled this differently if I was in uniform!
⚡️I was caught off guard I reacted
⚡️I did judge her in that moment yes
⚡️I want to learn from this
⚡️Have you experienced similar?

🚨If you think a child is at immediate risk you can call 📞 999 , 101 non emergency or contact the local council SS, or @nspcc_official 🚨

⚡️We all have a responsibility to safeguard children.

⚡️What would you have done in that situation?
It’s something I’ll never forget 😢
⚡️Please be kind and respectful debating this sensitive subject 🙏💫

BIRTH STORY

Shared with consent by Willow @willow.daschund

🌭A throw back cuteness overload 😍

🌭Willow is a pedigree and purposely bred
🌭It was such a beautiful family experience
🌭My girls particularly Maria adored this
🌭She loved watching her grow
🌭Anticipating, midwifing her
🌭She was so fat like a Cumberland she could hardly move…😂just like us
🌭She became very needy towards the end wanting to be with me all the time
🌭On the day of her labor she was amazing, they are the same as humans but unable to communicate how they feel ….
🌭As a midwife I observed similar behaviors, ⬇️

Tired easy, but Restless, opening bowels, lack of appetite, disturbed sleep, anxiety, seeking safety and familiarity in her surroundings

🌭Her labour progressed so well v fast! Took me by surprise
🌭She birthed her first pup on the sofa it fell between
Cushions 🫣she didn’t cry, just panting
🌭She chewed off the placenta immediately and ate it so fast you could hardly see them!
🌭Then every 30 mins or so another pup was born
🌭4 pups 2 boys 2 girls almost identical chocolates weighing more or less the same
🌭The instinctive behavior is the same as ours
🌭To keep them close, feed them protect them!
🌭I didn’t have to intervene once or support their feeding she was such a good mom.
🌭The only difference is once they start moving (naughty toddlers) they reject them 😂
🌭By that point they are super cute and ready for new homes with humans 🤎🤎🤎🤎

CAN you believe not one single SPOT on any of them I was a little disappointed 😔 😂

And unsurprisingly 2 where homed with midwives 😂

🌭I loved dog breeding except from the 💩🤮

Have you seen an animal birth? ⬇️ by @maternal_matters
