POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Today is my father’s birthday. I took this photo of him in his study petting one of our cats (Snoopy) many years ago. It is how I prefer to remember him - diligently reading, writing, studying, while listening to Coltrane, Monk, or their contemporaries. A remarkable man of difficult circumstances, he rose above hardship to achieve more than most. I was exceptionally lucky to have as much time with him as I did in my youth.

Legacy is complicated, but most prominent in my memory is a father who exemplified strong character, integrity, and grit despite great suffering. He routinely went out of his way to help friends and strangers alike, almost as an extension of spiritual practice, no matter the cost to himself. When I fail (often, still) to embody these traits, memories of his humility and gracious nature illuminate the path forward. As anyone who has lost knows, grief doesn’t end - it follows us, day after day. It also provides us with a vessel by which to honor the spirit and memory of those we’ve loved. To those of you who I am fortunate enough to call close friends, he would’ve loved to know you, and I wish you could have known him.

ps before one of you googles the titles on the desk and gets all fucked up about it, worth noting my father was a historian and writer by trade. Studying deeply flawed (sometimes evil) men as a means by which to attempt an understanding of the darkness within the human soul was a practice he routinely engaged in. It may have been research for something he intended to publish. Whatever the case, Heaven and Hell are within us. He would’ve despised the tech bros and their artificial intelligence. by @mathieuthompson
