Ishtar And Her Golden Torn Glove

This painting emerged from a feeling of recollection — not only of a distant past, but of those things that remain within us after they have passed.

I imagined Ishtar as a young woman caught in a quiet moment of remembrance, her head slightly bowed and her fingers intertwined. Around her face, figs appear among her blue hair: unripe, ripe, and one opened. The fig carries both sweetness and irritation. Its milky sap can sting the skin, and this is reflected in the golden glove she wears — beautiful, protective, yet torn.

The symbol of Ishtar rests on her lapel, while the figs surround her almost like memories: different in their stages, some still closed, some already revealed. They suggest that what we remember does not remain unchanged. It ripens, opens, fades, and sometimes reveals something we had not seen before.

The golden torn glove became, for me, a small contradiction: the wish to protect ourselves from what still touches us, and the impossibility of doing so completely.

I painted this work on a cutting board, perhaps unconsciously choosing a surface already associated with cutting, opening, and transformation.

“The Escapist”

We move through time. It does not erase; it changes our distance from things.

What once filled our horizon may remain, yet occupy only a small corner of our awareness. Experiences that once overwhelmed us slowly lose their urgency. Time softens both our aspirations and our burdens.

A tiny kite drifts beside an elderly man. He stares into space. It may suggest hope, freedom, memory, or simply the enduring impulse to escape.

The kite has not necessarily become smaller. The world may have remained exactly as it is, while we have continued moving through it.

Perhaps it is we who have travelled farther away.

Luceat Lux Vestra (Let Your Light Shine)

A woman smiles as though guarding a secret. Crowned with a strand of coloured lights resting upon her hair, she appears suspended in a moment of quiet anticipation. The lights remain unlit, yet she is far from dark. Her luminous presence suggests that the source of illumination already resides within her.

Above her, two extraordinary insects approach one another. A glowing firefly carries a plug attached to the strand of lights, while a second creature, part insect and part light bulb, extends a socket from the opposite side. Their movement is gentle and purposeful, as if participating in a small act of cosmic cooperation. The connection has not yet been made, but its promise fills the space between them.

The scene reflects on the mysterious ways in which light is shared, amplified, and awakened. The woman does not borrow radiance from the creatures around her; rather, their encounter becomes a catalyst for what already exists. The approaching connection suggests affection, inspiration, companionship, or any force capable of strengthening an inner glow.

Held in this suspended instant, the image lingers between possibility and fulfilment. The lights have not yet been switched on, yet their glow already seems inevitable, as though the moment of connection has begun before the wires can touch.

“Dancing on Uneven Heels”

There is a fragile balance between connection and individuality. Two young women occupy the circular space as opposing yet complementary forces: one turns her gaze outward, toward the unknown, while the other looks toward her companion. Their bodies lean into one another, suggesting support, dependence, and the quiet negotiations that shape human relationships.

Beneath their faces, an octopus emerges alongside a gramophone. The gramophone becomes the source of an unseen melody, while the octopus, with its many reaching arms, evokes the complexity of emotions, memories, and invisible ties. The music threads through these entanglements, transforming them into a shared rhythm.

Above the figures rests a pair of shoes decorated with fish, creatures of a fluid and ever-changing world. Although the shoes form a pair, their uneven heels introduce a subtle imbalance. They seem destined not for walking but for dancing, drawn into the melody rising from below.

The circular space gathers these fragments together—two women, an octopus, a melody, a pair of shoes—suspended somewhere between dream and memory, intimacy and drift.

“TICKETED STRANGERS” (Micro portraits), acrylics on paper, 8,5cm X 5,3cm. Portraits painted on disposed metro tickets. The faces of the passengers drawn on the tickets they have just thrown away.

Passengers on a very short journey, every day, up and down, coming and going: metro, electric railway, suburban train, buses, trams. Tickets, a very small piece of paper clasped in palms, sometimes crumpled, sometimes torn, or even in perfect condition. The people who clutch or just hold their tickets, sleepy in the mornings, exhausted in the afternoons, happy on their evening outings. They leave their fingerprints on the tickets, travel for a few minutes and then throw them in bins or down on the sidewalk. Some find them and reuse them while there is still valid time, others trample them, litter as a proof of human presence. Anonymous people, fixed-track routes; all alienated in the unknown crowd. Each face is the reflection of our loneliness.

“The Eviction”

An old woman in a green coat is lying down, grasping tightly a naked doll. A police officer is holding a gun above her aiming at her temple. On his chest we can read “Gaudia Civil” (the pleasure of being a citizen) instead of Guardia Civil. Beside the woman, a tortoise is fighting for its life as an axe, covered in blood, has smashed its shell and without it has no chance of surviving. Under the woman there is a huge bear trap with a key and a house-shaped keychain. Both the woman and the tortoise are in the verge of death but so are our sick societies, which are at death’s door.

The debt trap has captured the key of her home, her safe haven, and now she is lying powerless, having taken with her only a doll, like a child horrified in the middle of a nightmare, holding on to its favorite toy; nothing will go away. Evicting a person, especially old people and disabled ones, amounts to a death sentence. Our silence makes us all complicit in this atrocity. We are all brandishing this weapon and firing this bullet. The mechanism is the same for single persons and whole countries: enslavement through creating fabricated debt. Personal and national assets are being confiscated. Avaricious and unethical but at the same time legitimate criminal gangs sacrifice the lives of innocent people for more profit. This is a war. No hypocritical philanthropy will make a difference but our need for truth, justice and action.

“Devouring Beauty”
A girl walks by with a pet peacock by her side. She seems distant and absorbed in her thoughts. She has adorned her dress with a large peacock feather and her hair with a peacock’s head and a fork. Was that her previous pet that ended up as a delicacy and a trophy on her head? Is this what we constantly do? Offering our love and complete admiration and then devouring the objects of our passion? Devotion and thrill flutter like ephemeral butterflies and vanish suddenly before our eyes, which are ticking like fake clocks and marking our personal time.
It is true that beauty fades away but it is also certain that our perception of beauty wanes sooner. Disappointment follows and then the waiting to be fascinated again by a new beauty. What is left behind, is being eaten up, leftovers in our memory dish.
So, the beautiful girl struts, feeling pleased with her image and looking like a peacock. Is she ignorant or aware that she will face the same fate?

“Hail, Howl & Farewell”.

This is a painting about loss. I drew inspiration for this theme from the post-mortem photography in the Victorian era. The father is holding his dead infant on his lap. He is also trying to hold on to a parrot, which inevitably tries to fly away. The baby’s bonnet has a theta nigrum embroidered on it and the presence of the red spider lilies also signifies death.
The father has a sea anemone boutonniere, a creature with no heart. A tainted nurse watch with no hands is hanging from his sleeve depicting also the 13th hour, the sad hour, the hour of no existence. He is seated on a chair that has fixed on it a three cup anemometer and a rooster compass showing the direction of the wind: the four letters form the word “Tace” (=be quiet). So the 4 cardinal points equate to “Silence”.

The mother is posing with a spindle, like Atropos (=without turn), the third of the Fates and a personification of death. A butterfly (“psyche” in Greek a word used for both the soul and the butterfly) is carrying a pair of scissors in the form of a bird, and cuts short the blue thread, indicating the child’s life. On her hand has a bracelet, a snake curled up as the infinity symbol.

The silent and desperate parents are surrounded by three dog heads howling; Cerberus the hound dog guarding the gates of Hades. The names written on their collars are Latin synonyms of Guilt. Numbness, remorse and post-traumatic stress are present.

It is a frozen moment, time is standing still and it feels vacant. There is no escape, no hope; the rooster anemoscope is not going to turn.
