POSTS STORIES REELS

#NowReading Two weeks ago, when I read Agg’s first book “I Hear She’s a Real Bitch”, I asked in this space if anyone would come with me to one of her restaurants. Plans are afoot.

I don’t normally read two books by someone in such close proximity, but it’s been fun to spend so much time with Agg and learn both what goes into building her spaces, and also what’s happening behind the curtain when we dine. She really fucking cares about creating these places and finds real nuance in all their elements - their place in the community, the way they succeed as a business, the critical conversation around them, their ability to create an atmosphere, and - of course - their ability to provide great food.

It’s inspiring to spend time with someone who believes that every grave note makes for a better product, and I’m really looking forward to seeing for myself next month.

Last thing - i will give extra points to any book that spends a whole chapter on playlists. I also swear NOT to crib multiple tracks for my own November mix.

From the moment this film, I KNEW we were gonna be talking about it on the #matineecast. It does what all great art does and gives the audience so much to think about… so much to talk about… so much to re-frame.
I’m a lucky gent that @jimlaczkowski was available to drop by and chew the fat…and so very generous with his time time.
We get into all of it for your Monday morning so come join us wherever you listen 🎧

#SundaySpins (Mild irony when Instagram doesn’t license the music from the album you chose to feature in your photo…)

I know that there are lots of OG Beck fans who adore his Odelay years, the melancholy of sea change, and the weird alchemy of Midnite Vuktures… but for me, his run through Guero, The Information, and this album was where he was really humming. The arrangements were what did it for me - the low vocals, the thumping drums and low guitars. It spoke to me as the promise of a new century cracked and crumbled and going back to it always feels like going back home…

#OctoberBookWrapUp Thanks to a wobbly schedule and some LONG selections, the hard copies were dwarfed by the audiobooks this month.
Thanks okay though, because when it came to the stories that really landed, the audiobooks were MOSTLY where it was at too! It be’s that way sometimes.
Favourite book by a MILE was “The Disappearers” which is highly in contention for my favourite book of the year! Tom Junod’s piece of nonfiction is a distant second.
Least favourite was probably “Ply” where I really loved the world building but couldn’t latch on to the overall plot in the way I like to.

#NowReading The holds are starting to pile up a little so the end of the year is gonna be a bit of a sprint. I thought for a hot moment about returning this one unread, but when I picked through the first few pages, I found myself draw-in.

If I cancel plans the next two months, please don’t be offended.

#NowReading Years ago, I watched a documentary about the Oakland, CA police force. In it, a pastor speaks to a room of new recruits and brings their attention to the only item on their uniform that is uniquely theirs - their name plate.

He underlines that even though an officers name is their own and they come to the job as whoever they are … that the past has already stolen their identity, and run up an incredibly high bill. It’s now up to them how they choose to begin to settle that debt.

Reading “The Black Shield”, I’m reminded of that conversation, especially as it pertains to officers of color. It’s a complicated legacy they represent in America, and one that comes with an incredibly high bill.

#SundaySpins Today we go back to 2007 (Damn, was that already almost 20 years ago?!)

I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again: I was late to the party with Radiohead. REAL late, terribly late. Like, everyone has moved from the living room to the kitchen and all there’s left to drink is apricot liqueur LATE.

I just wasn’t in the place to receive them during their early ascent (read: Bends, OK, Kid A, Insomniac).

Yes, I know.

By 2003 though, something in me had shifted and I grabbed on to “There There” with two hands…and also started moving backwards. Like a person suddenly realizing they enjoy their coffee black after only taking it with sugar, I slurped-up everything with new ears.

So by the time In Rainbows arrived in 2097, I was ready. I was ready to meet it on its own terms, I was ready to love it at first blush, I was ready to pay for something I could get for free, and I was even ready to see them play live and be transported.

Sometimes it’s not about being early or late to a party; sometimes it’s just about being willing to get out the door and enjoy the party at all.

#SaturdayMorningComics This used to be a habit; both the media and the moment.
The moment has been all over the place for five years, so there’s no complaining about that now.
As for the medium… I’m behind. I cannot entirely explain why. I feel like part of it comes from not having as many suggestions or recommendations come my way. My social circle has changed a little, and the interweb isn’t what it once was. As such, finding new things to get excited about the way Bitch Planet, Paper Girls, or Low once excited me is harder to find.

The love is still there - glowing embers, if not a roaring fire - but the habit has definitely changed.

#NowReading There’s a very very small part of me that wants to try to set a new personal best for books read in a year. Teeny. Minuscule.

I won’t make it - primarily because December becomes a wash after the halfway mark - but short and beautiful books like “Triage” make it feel possible.

It’s been a long five years since I read “Citizen”. Maybe this is a sign I should go back and read her other volumes to soak up more of her beautiful work!

#NowReading The first of two that we’re starting today 😊

I can’t believe it’s already been three years since I read Diaz’s “Trust”. It seems like just yesterday that I was soaking-in that journey into the past with the sun in my face in a local coffee shop.

Time flies, doesn’t it?

Now Diaz is taking me into the future to meet a character who is bootlegging … power? Interesting idea! Shove over and make space for me in the skiff.

#NowReading Day after day I’m reminded that the reality of a family, or a couple, or a couple that HAS a family, is often much more than meets the eye.

Listening to Junod recount his experiences with his father have been a little bit of everything. There’s been laughter, there’s been shaking of heads, there’s been amazement at how much could go on in less-connected times.

More than anything, there’s been kinship. A feeling of how you can’t really know a story until it’s over; and perhaps you can’t really know a life until it ends. Junod’s father was a different man from a different age, so saying that we can learn from him is an interesting way to put it.

Perhaps what we learn is who we want to be…by looking at who another man chose to be.

New #matineecast today on an absolute BANGER of a film for fall. Come join @britany_murphs and I as we discuss YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER.
The film is playing in select cinemas now and arriving on Prime this autumn.
It’s a project that came from the team that was going to make BLADE for Marvel, but ultimately created something much more singular when that film fell through.
