🐝👑 QUEEN GILLIAN — LOOKING GOOD!

This is the Nuc I made from Queen Gillian earlier this year.

She’s one of my original colonies fram the Ferndale Apiary - she’s now in residence at the Matley Apiary… after slowing down during that first long heatwave, I then missed the signs that they were building up again and they were preparing to swarm.

Luckily, I caught it in time and performed an artificial swarm, splitting the colony myself.

Fast forward to today and I’ve opened her Nuc to see how they’re preparing for winter…

🐝 Bees covering all 6 frames
🥚 Eggs & larvae across the middle 4 frames
🍯 Good stores on the outside frames
👑 And Queen Gillian is clearly still laying well!

For a little Nuc that came from a colony that was nearly away on a swarming adventure, I’m bloody happy with that! 😂

Now the job is making sure they go into winter with a strong population and enough food to see them through.

Another little lesson from the girls — they don’t always follow the plan! 🐝😂

🍯🐝 WELL… I’VE ONLY GONE AND BLOODY DONE IT! 😂🐝

The moment I’ve been waiting for…

my very first jar of honey from my own bees! 🍯🤩

Yes, it’s a little thicker than I would’ve liked. 🤦🏻‍♂️
should really have left it in the warm cupboard for another couple of hours, but after waiting all this bloody time…
I got impatient! 🤦🏼‍♂️😂

But honestly, there were plenty of times this year when I wasn’t sure I’d actually get to this point.

We had seven weeks of drought.

I had a colony swarm because I missed the signs.

Re-queened colonies that were failing.

Had failed queen acceptance…

I caught colonies that were about to swarm, Had split them into two and basically had to start again.

There’s been plenty of head-scratching, plenty of frustration and a fair few moments of “WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING?” 😂

But despite all that…

I’ve absolutely loved it.

And now I’m standing here pouring honey that my own bees have made, from comb they’ve built, after a year of learning on the job.

That feels pretty bloody good. ❤️🐝🍯

So here it is…

There’s only a limited number of jars available, and they’ll be PRE-ORDER & COLLECTION ONLY.

If you want one of my first ever jars before they disappear, get in touch!

Once they’re gone… they’re gone!

This is my morning brew for the next couple of weeks.. milk Honey and Shilajit. Now - I know what you’re thinking - what is this silly shit called Shilajit…..
It’s a mineral from the Himalayas - the Nepalese and Tibetans have been using it for thousands of years… so they’re using it to walk around the Himalayas I’m having it before I go to the gym. I’ve been chatting to mike at @shilajittea about some amazing things we could potentially do together - but I’ve gotta believe in something 100 % before I put my name to it. #realhoney #naturalremedies #apothacary #herbaltea by @matleyhoney

🐝🔬 A BIT OF BEE RESEARCH AT MATLEY HONEY! 🍯

I had Jess from a Manchester University pop round today. She’s studying Animal Behaviour, Biology and Conservation, and is working on her dissertation looking at how pollution affects our pollinating bees.

We had a chat about bee health, disease, colony losses and honey yields, and she collected some samples to help with her research.

When I first started keeping bees, I never imagined where this journey would take me. From honey, swarm rescues and new apiaries to now helping with university research! 😂🐝

I genuinely never know what’s coming next on this beekeeping adventure… but I’m loving every minute of it! ❤️🍯

🤒 💣 FLU-BOMBS - what la the dance ?.?.🕺

Keep it in the fridge - use within a week. Common sense right… it says it on the label… if you’ve left it on the sunny windowsill you’ve probably spoiled it - like a bottle of milk.

If you’ve order some - let me know when you want to collect. This is the 3rd lot we’ve done for our followers - some have ordered them every time - 🙌🏼

🍯⚖️ ARE YOU GETTING LESS HONEY IN A FLU BOMB? 🤔

A few people have asked whether all the garlic, ginger, turmeric, lemon, chilli etc. are taking up space in the jar and leaving you with less honey…

So I thought I’d actually weigh it and prove it! 😂

The jar is weighed with all the ingredients in it BEFORE I add the honey, then weighed again once it’s filled.

The result?

🍯 236g of actual honey! Now they’re not all this full - but they are all over weight

The label says 8oz — which is 227g.

So you’re actually getting 6g MORE honey than the stated weight! 😂🐝

No sneaky short measures here.

And let’s be honest…

You don’t get that in supermarkets, do you? 😉😂

If you have ordered for this week, please get in touch to arrange collection from Friday morning
