A podcast exploring horror through an intersectional feminist lens, focusing on film, literature, and culture.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
When I started Matriarchs of Horror a year ago, I didn’t have some grand vision for what I wanted it to become. I just wanted a space to talk about horror. But somewhere along the way, it became something bigger. The more I connected with fellow horror lovers and eventually expanded those conversations into a podcast, the more I realized I wanted to create spaces where we could come together and have the kinds of conversations that horror so often invites us to have about women’s lived experiences.

And next month, I’m finally doing it!!!

On Nov. 2nd I’ll be hosting the first-ever Matriarchs of Horror salon, an intimate conversation exploring abortion access, bodily autonomy, and the ways those themes have manifested throughout horror. My friend and author Eleanor Johnson and journalist @garnethenderson have graciously agreed to join me as speakers, and I’ll be partnering with @nyaafund, with proceeds from ticket sales benefiting their work supporting abortion access in New York. I also wanted to bring these conversations to life before midterms so we can all understand the very real fight for abortion access under this administration. A huge thank you to @qedastoria for hosting us and if you’re based in NYC, I hope to see some of you there.

When Ken Russell’s 1971 film ‘The Devils’ was initially released, it was considered too controversial for audiences. However, the controversy behind the film was nothing more than studios trying to censor storytelling that exposed the hypocrisy behind powerful institutions. Thankfully, after 55 years, the film was restored to the version Russell intended audiences to view it in. The restored, 4K version is playing at @filmlinc and @ifccenter from Oct. 15th through Oct. 22nd!

The moment I came across the synopsis for @samanthaloisjosephs’s debut novel, I was hooked!Samantha’s team was kind enough to send me a copy, and when it arrived yesterday, I immediately plopped down on my couch and devoured the entire thing in one sitting. I absolutely fell in love with Martha as a character, and I haven’t stopped thinking about her since. If you love queer, feminist horror that interrogates gender and bodily autonomy, this is one you absolutely need to pick up!!

My new best friend @sarahlangan stopped by the podcast this week to discuss her new horror novel ‘Trad Wife,’ which scared me shitless! I’ve been dying to do an episode on trad wife culture for a while now but couldn’t find an interesting angle that wasn’t recycled. I think it’s safe to say Sarah’s book was the motivation I needed. You can check out our full conversation wherever you get your podcasts!

Getting to do this podcast has genuinely been one of the greatest joys of my life! Not only because I get to talk about horror (which, let’s face it, I could do all day!), but because it gives me the opportunity to have incredible, nuanced conversations about women’s lived experiences and the very real horrors we navigate. This week, author @sarahlangan joins me to discuss her new novel, Trad Wife, which, quite frankly, scared the living shit out of me. We dive into the unsettling rise of tradwife influencers, the cultural forces fueling their popularity, and what happens when dangerous ideologies are packaged as aspirational lifestyles. These are exactly the kind of conversation I started this podcast to have, and I can’t wait for you to hear it. Our full conversation drops tomorrow at midnight! 🖤

I love books that give me a new perspective on something I might already have an opinion on, and @sarahlangan’s new novel ‘Trad Wife’ certainly did that for me. It also scared the shit out of me and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

It’s that time of year again! @brooklynhorrorfest has an amazing lineup this year, including some pretty unique horror directed by women. I’m so excited to watch all of these next week and even more excited that the festival is paying attention to how women are contributing to the genre!

I’m so excited for you all to listen to this episode! Every time I interview Eleanor Johnson, I always come away with a greater appreciation for the horror genre. And this time was no different. Eleanor’s new book ‘Monstrous Bitch’ is officially out and we spend the duration of the podcast discussing the several ways society has demonized women for refusing to fit within traditional roles. You can listen to the full episode on Spotify and Apple!

A perfect rainy Sunday to catch up on some reading! A huge thank you to @sarahlangan for sending me her latest novel, Trad Wife, which I am almost finished with. If you’ve been following my channel from the beginning, you know I love horror that holds a mirror up to society and forces it to question its choices. This book is soooooo delicious and I can’t wait to discuss it with Sarah when she stops by the podcast next week.

My friend Eleanor Johnson stopped by the podcast this week to discuss her new book ‘Monstrous Bitch,’ which explores the demonization of women throughout history and the nuances of those women untraditional lives. We also delved into the case surrounding the Jane Doe at Cornell, as well as the Lindsay Clancy trial. Tune in on Tuesday for the full conversation!
