Nothing can speed up your progress like a 50,000 pound hunk of metal and a good operator!

Things happen way faster than people even could imagine! This cabin was started just a few days before the end of an episode in Tennesse and it was fully finished with the help of the local community and our friends. More helping hands and sacrifice makes the miracles happen folks!

Did you know garlic can be grown in Alaska?! We planted a variety of German white, German red, Russian Red and Georgian Fire cloves about 5 inches deep, spaced 6-8 inches apart, covered over with 12 inches of mulch in the form of straw, covered with a garden bed plastic frame. Planting in the short window just after the first frost makes the cloves take steps towards bulb growth.

A single tree can shed over 100k leaves in the fall! Don’t let this overlooked resource go to waste. Use leaves to make a compost pile, animal bedding for chickens, leaf mold for soil, mulch and more!

Marty Raney is quite the “feller”. He grew up in the tall trees of the Pacific Northwest logging at the young age of 15 years old! My dad has always stressed that felling trees is the most dangerous job on a homestead and after the dust settles the sense of accomplishment and relief is a nice reward for a job well done.

Seeing my Dad work all day, it’s great to see him still find time to do the things he loves. I think the lesson here is Marty Raney makes use of every part of his day for work and play. Also epic cameo from our good buddy Kaj!

This is for Beekeepers in colder climates that want to keep their bees year round! Alaskan winters are 7 months long and beekeepers are still able to keep their bee colonies alive through the cold winter months by winterizing the bee boxes.

Finding a hidden “stud” behind your sheet rock is easy if know this simple hack. Your fasteners (nails screws etc…) will not hold up for long if they aren’t going into the actual framing in the walls. Skip the trip to Home Depot to buy a tool you already own, and the best part is you can find this “stud finder” on your fridge! #diy #HomesteadRescue #quicktip #construction #hacks by @matt.raney
