Journal entry: “Whenever I travel some place for more than four or five days, I become so immersed that I feel like my whole existence has been there. I’m sure other people feel this too. That has certainly been the case on this trip. I feel as if I’ve known no other life, no other home but Japan. The past two weeks have been a wonderful fantasy come true. The cities, the mountains and time with so many kind people - old friends and new friends. I will miss this country. But I look forward to returning to Tennessee and spending the holidays with family.” #japan

Before coming to Japan, many web sources warned that I might feel intimidated by initial encounters with Japanese #toilets . The same sources later said by the time I got back to the US, I’d want one. It’s all true. Let’s go over a few points of comparison:

The first photo is a men’s room right off the street in #kyoto . No litter. No stains. No graffiti. I was so struck by this. It’s accessible to anyone walking past. The last pic is my almost one-piece (🙌🏼) bathroom in Gion.

“Dear Corbu, everything we have fought for is paralleled in ancient Japanese culture… Japanese houses are the best and most modern examples that I know of...” -Walter Gropius (one of the founders of the Bauhaus School) in a letter to Le Corbusier after visiting Katsura Rikyu. The Imperial Villa was constructed around 1650, and Gropius’ letter was written around 1950, 300 years later. From a few days ago. Walking around #higashiyama district of #kyoto , up the hills to #kiyomizudera . It was nice to see the shops in this area, so lively around sunset and again, sleepily open the next morning. taken in Higashiyama District by @matthew_culver
