Like the proverbial horse, we don’t stop we keep going. Did Eagleman 70.3 and Ironman Maryland in the same year completing the Crabbyman challenge. First time I have felt proud in an accomplishment in a long time. Every time I’ve achieved something recently, I internally don’t see it as an accomplishment but rather an expectation. So it felt good to feel accomplished.

Wouldn’t have made it to the end without the help and support from friends and family. Huge thanks to Rosie from @frontpackswim for making me a proper swimmer, and @freund_anna for suffering with me during the swims. @awdavidson011 and Tom helped answer all my questions to race day and gave me the confidence to finish. As well as the support from my family (Pitell and Genuario’s) for cheering me on, especially my mom who pulled a 20 hr day yesterday running around to get pictures. There’s a bunch of other people that I don’t have room to mention here that have been in my corner as well. Probably wont do another crazy event until after i defend my PhD, so i can focus on getting everything done. Going into a 16 hr event already burnt out is not ideal lmao. by @matthew_pitell

1st 70.3 in the bag! Choppy swim, headwind on bike, and a dehydrated run made for a tough race, but I had an absolute blast! Excited to get stronger for next year. #triathlon #ironman703 #jonesbeach taken in Jones Beach Amphitheater by @matthew_pitell

Did my first ever bike race last weekend: the Gotthard Gran Fondo. The race only had two timed sections the tremola and a climb to Ronco. The tremola is one of the oldest roads in Switzerland and features cobbles. It’s a HC climb averaging 7.6% gradients for 12 km taking me 1 hr and 25 minutes. After a terrifying descent, we went back up to Ronco for a cat 3 climb that was spicy. I got my units confused and thought the climb was 3.5km, but it was 3.5 miles. We survived and made it to the finish line with both segments taking me 2 hrs(I wasn’t last which was sick). It was a stunning course, and I recorded an hour of the climb. I’ll be putting together snippets and maybe making a super cut for YouTube.

First part of the descent after climbing Pfannenstiehl. Way too hot so had to take a break on the climb. Didn’t add sound for some ASMR #cycling #switzerland taken in Zürich, Switzerland by @matthew_pitell

It’s been awhile… With a park a 5 min walk, it would be a travesty for me to not at least train basics. Who knows I may get to the point where I can do basic freestyle. Played with my new camera a little bit. Cycling content coming soon 👀 #calisthenics #streetworkout #calibarnation taken in Zürich, Switzerland by @matthew_pitell

It’s been over a year and a half since my injury, and I finally mustered up the courage to try a backflip again. Surprisingly, it’s like riding a bike 😂. Felt kinda like the old me a little even though I’m way weaker (haven’t strength trained in 4 months). Need to test out side flips next 😳. Climbed some V3s but didn’t record any of them. Glad @frankie_edmiston and @jimmyperreira were able to hang out on my short trip back to Pittsburgh.

1 year post second op from my broken leg and completed my 1st triathlon. 1,025 minutes of swimming, 1,167 minutes of biking, and 1,325 minutes of running totaling 383 miles went into training for this event (not counting the hours of rehab, lifting, and recovery). I have never been good at cardio and endurance events, so it has been a refreshing challenge. Huge shoutout to @meil.sam for doing this with me. From the 6:30 AM swims before work to facing headwinds on a 20 mile bike ride it was nice having someone to train with.

The event today is one of the shortest distances for triathlons (800 yard swim, 10 mile bike, 3.2 mile run). I am dog water at swimming but my biking is pretty decent, I missed having the fastest bike split in my age group by 1 second 😩. The run was utter pain due to wet trail running conditions, but overall had a fantastic time.

Coming up, I have a 50 mile bike ride with 2k elevation gain scheduled for September, and after that I will be training for an Olympic and half Ironman distance triathlons. Thank you to everyone who supported me as I got back on my feet (literally). I’m excited for this next chapter of endurance challenges.

Long af V3 from tonight. Definitely getting some of the strength back. Ankle is able to take the impact pretty well. If it continues feeling decent I might add some kicks into my training next week 🫣 #climbing #bouldering taken in Newark, Delaware by @matthew_pitell

Ankle is good enough to start climbing again. Started climbing consistently about a month ago, and it feels so nice to move again. Still a ways from any type of really hard impact like running, tricking, and freestyle. Hoping by the end of the month I can start doing some light tricking 🫣

Slowly coming back 😩
I’ve been back to my normal lifting even legs (although at a fraction of my old strength) and started testing the waters with running and other forms of impact. I’m still a ways away from any type of tricking or freestyle, but there has been progress. I’m hoping in about 3 months to be able to be running like normal and maybe simple flips and by June I will be back at full strength 🤞
