Peterborough! Monday night! The Dreaming Spires! Annie Keating Band!

In 2006, Nada Surf toured in Europe with an amazing band called Goldrush (go listen to "Wait For The Wheels" and "Let You Down" for a start, pure gold). The brothers Robin and Joe Bennett had already founded, along with their family, the @truckfestival in Oxfordshire, which is flourishing still. They invited me up to play their smaller (but equally magical!) @septembersongfestival a few years ago.

Robin and Joe, along with their fellow Goldrush member Nick "Growler" Fowler, formed @the_dreaming_spires in 2010. They have so many great songs, but I've been particularly obsessed with their debut single "Everything All The Time" lately. I just saw Nick a few days ago when he came through town and he invited me up to their show at the @pborokeytheatre in Peterborough on Monday and asked if I'd jump onstage for a couple of songs. I said yes of course!

Thanks to the wonderful people at @somethingincommoncambridge and @ellimatta.cambridge, I’m getting to live out a daydream I’ve had for a long time: hosting an evening of slowed-down vinyl — 45s played at 33. Not all 45s sound good that way, but some really do, and can help us slow down our insides and find a little extra peace, even with the stereo turned up. I'l say a little about the records as I go, but I'll mostly just play them. Let’s sit, chill, eat, drink, talk and pretend the world isn’t spinning quite as fast as it is. Matthew Caws is the singer/guitarist/songwriter of New York’s Nada Surf, formed in 1992. Their tenth and most recent album was Moon Mirror, #21 in Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 50 Indie Rock albums of 2024. He has called Cambridge home for the better part of two decades.

From Matthew:
“Like just about everyone who ever had a record player, I’ve often checked what songs sound like at the wrong speed. Most of them aren’t improved by the move, but some I really love that way. Some are a believable alternate reality, some are something else entirely.

For a few years I’ve been collecting 45s that sound compelling, amazing, or at least interesting slowed down. From new wave to pop, from hard rock to country, one thing I think they all have in common is that they help us slow down our chattering modern minds, they help us land into our parasympathetic nervous systems.

Putting on an evening of slow listening has been a pet idea/dream of mine for a long time. I’m thrilled that Ellimatta and Something in Common are making it possible!”
