“To live in these times is in a lot of ways scary, and in all of my recent works I’m working to acknowledge that, and to overcome it.”

Explosions, uncertainty, shapeshifting identities and visceral gestures—coexist to form unexpected harmonies in the enigmatic paintings of Matthew Choberka.

Paintings that meet this moment.

See these and more of Matthew Choberka's new works by joining us for gallery stroll on Friday night, 6-9pm.

In The Guardian, I wanted to create a figure that embodies both strength and stillness. The form stands upright and grounded, slightly inclined yet stable — a quiet symbol of protection, vigilance, and inner resilience.
I’ve intentionally reduced and abstracted the details to move away from portraying a specific individual. For me, this piece is about something more universal — a presence rather than a portrait. The raised head suggests awareness, as if the figure is calmly observing and safeguarding its surroundings.

The surface is built up with pigments and layers of glaze, creating a smooth yet subtly textured finish that interacts with light and gives the sculpture a sense of life. I’ve also slightly exaggerated the proportions to reinforce its role as a guardian — something enduring and quietly powerful.

Placed within the colourful, immersive space created by Matt Choberka’s paintings, the figure takes on a new dialogue — a quiet, steady presence set against a vibrant, shifting environment.

Ultimately, The Guardian isn’t about action, but about presence — a calm, protective force that simply exists and holds its ground. #TheGuardian #sculpture #sculpturefigure taken in Pfaelzer Hof Artist Residencies by @matthewchoberka

Art File Feature| Matthew Choberka 🎨
Matthew Choberka is a painter based in Ogden, Utah, and Professor in the Department of Visual Art & Design at Weber State University.
Working across oil, acrylic, and digital painting 💻🖌️, his practice moves fluidly between physical and virtual space.
Choberka’s paintings confront the instability and complexity of the contemporary world 🌎. Each image stands on its own, yet the works remain interconnected—an ongoing internal debate about the knowability of the other, and even of the self. There’s tension, ambiguity, and a willingness to sit inside uncertainty ✨.
