In a world that guarantees you nothing, allow yourself to soak in every damn moment. ❤️❤️❤️ by @matthewkpelkey

Parkside apartment available!

Hello Facebook friends! Our upstairs unit will be available starting December/January. If you know anyone looking please have them reach out!

We’ve had great tenants over the years and I’m sad to see them leave but it’s usually because they are buying a house of their own!

$1,600/month. 2nd floor. Dog friendly. ~1,600 sq ft. 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, good sized kitchen, large dinning room, double living room, fireplace, balcony, large fenced in back yard, plenty of storage space in the attic, quiet street with plenty of parking, very close to Delaware Park, the zoo and Sister’s Hospital! Well maintained original woodwork and built-ins. by @matthewkpelkey

It’s PCS season in the Army. A day we knew would come eventually. And in keeping with our family tradition, it’s time to take on a new adventure and push outside of our comfort zone.

As of next week Amber will be accepting a position as a professor at West Point where she will be teaching constitutional and military law. Was this part of the plan? Nope! But what an incredible opportunity. I couldn’t be more proud of her.

That means we’ll be moving to the Hudson Valley. Don’t worry—we’re keeping our house in Buffalo and will be checking in on you all periodically.

If you’re down in the Hudson Valley, make sure to stop in and say hello! And of course, GO ARMY BEAT NAVY! by @matthewkpelkey

Buffalo Marathon Race Recap:

In keeping with my own tradition, I like to break this down into “the good” and “the-not-so-good”

*The Good*

Goal achieved: I had a goal going into this race: I wanted to feel in control the whole race, wanted to finish strong, and wanted to get across that finish line without injury (something that has eluded me the last two fulls). Boxes checked. While this wasn’t a PR, I am actually more satisfied with how I performed in this race and feeling like I’ve set a nice baseline for future races.

Fueling and hydration: thanks to my work with @stevielynlyn , this finally felt on point. Was able to have my best performance in the 2nd half and felt great afterwards and the next day.

Pacing: I had to fight myself to slow down (esp on the first half) but was able to do so and avoided completely crashing at the end.

Pre-race anxiety: I felt really good before this race. Perhaps it just comes with getting more races under my belt but I wasn’t doom scrolling in my own mind all night. I also took off all my devices before bed—reducing my reliance on them for how I *think* I can perform.

*The Not-So-Good*

Sleep: despite feeling a lot better, and going to bed early, my 5.5 month old son decided he was going to sabotage my sleep—waking up ever 2-3 hours all night (when he usually sleeps through the night!). Thankfully, being a father has taught me I can do quite a lot even with poor sleep. Add running a marathon to that list!

Hills under fatigue: the Delaware park hills hit a little different after ~20 miles. I perhaps pushed a bit too hard and struggled to recover which had my pace slip a little (though still not terrible).

Pacing: I probably left a little in the tank and could have pushed a bit more but really didn’t want to crash out on another race. No doubt something I’ll work from going forward.

I turned 42 years old today.
I ran 42km.
In 4:22 (unofficial)

I’ll see myself out. by @matthewkpelkey

4 days until the Buffalo Marathon. My third full and first time running the full Buffalo course (I’ve run the half the last two years). Sunday is my 42nd birthday. I’ll be running 42km. Three years ago I had run the turkey trot—once…virtually, during Covid. I’ve done a lot since then. And there’s a lot I’d still like to do.

The last three years can be hard to appreciate sometimes. It’s easy to get lost in my own anxiety and self doubt. But I show up, put the work in, and brush off whatever my lizard brain is saying to me. I’ve learned to show myself more grace. I’ve learned to find what works for me. Not perfection—just consistency.

This training cycle has been so different. Training is a priority, but now more than ever, my family is. I don’t want to give up time with my son and my wife. So I do what I can, be flexible with my schedule, and sometimes have to get creative. Early this year sleep and stress were a real challenge for recovery and training. It was hard to find the energy.

But at the same time, it can also been incredibly motivating. I’m by no means a young dad. Thankfully I’m healthy and reasonably fit. I owe a lot to @quarter_deck_athletics for that and I don’t take it for granted. Nothing is guaranteed. So I’m going to do everything I can to make sure when my son is old enough to want to run his first race that I can do it right along side him.

4 days. LFG.

It’s been three months since our son was born and it was fun to look back on the break in training, its impact, and the road back (though still plenty to go!).

Even as my load gets closer to where it should be, my training doesn’t look like it did before December. It can be more difficult to find the time. I have to be a lot more intentional. I have to be more flexible.

Yes, training is still a priority, but so is being a present father in my son’s life, supportive spouse, and making sure I’m there for every little moment. That means sometimes I need to be willing to show myself more grace than I used to.

It helps now that the weather is improving and we can do things as a family. I can run on the track while Amber and Teddy walk laps. I can do body weight strength work while they play in the grass next to me.

The VO2 Max will come back but you can’t get back the missed moments. ❤️❤️❤️ by @matthewkpelkey

ICE murdered a 37 year old VA nurse named Alex Pretti today in Minneapolis.

There’s no but—it was cold blood. He was a law abiding citizen with a permit to carry a conceled weapon. He wasn’t brandishing it. He had his phone in his hand and was trying to help a woman ICE was harassing. ICE agents pulled the gun off of him before they shot him.

He has a first amendment right.

He has a second amendment right.

He has a right to due process.

2016.

A reminder that we’ve lived 1,000 lives together.

Amber was running for Senate.

I was sailing and running Black Squirrel.

We had just bought our house in Parkside (before all the renovations) and just adopted News.

It was a transformative year filled with risk, working our asses off, heartache, closing chapters, and starting new ones. We said goodbye to longtime friends and said hello to many new ones. It was just as much of an amazing year as it was an incredibly difficult year. We rolled the dice, came up short, and figured out how to move forward. Together. ❤️

…oh yeah, and I got glitter-bombed by an anonymous person that to this day remains a mystery!! by @matthewkpelkey

2025: one hell of a year in ways I could never have imagined. We of course saved the best for last! Cheers! 🧸 ❤️ by @matthewkpelkey
