As the evenings draw in, a room doesn't need redesigning. It needs warmth and texture added in the right places.

01 Interline the curtains
Interlined curtains can stay up all year. Pair them with blinds behind for the lighter summer months.

02 Dress the bed in layers
Bedspreads, wool throws, velvet cushions and deeper tones.

03 Warm the textile palette
Think texture, thickness and cosiness.

04 Choose throws with weight
Summer is lightweight cotton. Now it's chunky wool, velvet, embroidery and quilting.

05 Mix matt and sheen
Always consider reflection. By candlelight, a room with no glass, metal or shine will look flat.

Add soft lighting and a warm scent and you are ready to see in the season of mist and mellow fruitfulness.

A good snug isn’t about size; it’s about how it makes you feel. Here are our five essentials for a room that wraps around you. We think a small room works best for this and don't worry about natural light, it can be the darkest room in the house, if the lighting is well considered and there is plenty of texture. Colour wash the room to really get into the cosy vibe, that's when the walls, ceiling and upholstery are all in the same shade, or variations of it. if this scares you, get in touch for some advice!

A few Friday reflections from Decorex - we visited this week.

For us, Decorex is about so much more than seeing what’s new. It’s a chance to spend time with the suppliers and makers we work with, to see their latest pieces in person, and to appreciate the craft behind them.

Nothing replaces being able to touch a material, see how a finish catches the light, or talk to the people who made it. Those conversations always find their way into our projects.

We came away with fresh ideas, new discoveries, and a renewed appreciation for the incredible craftsmanship in this industry.

A quick detour between meetings to see the new accessory displays at Harvey Nichols, with each table styled as its own colour story. We make a point of keeping up with what the top stores are showing. It’s a lesson in how confident colour can transform a space.

A study is where the house gets serious.

Whether it’s a dedicated room or a corner you’ve claimed, it should be somewhere you can concentrate by day and close the door on by evening. These are the five things we advise:

01 Face the light, not the wall
02 Light the task, then the room
03 Soften the sound
04 Close the door on paperwork
05 Add a second chair

Where do you really work at home? Tell us below.

Today is World Mental Health Day

The spaces we spend our days in quietly influence our mood, our sleep and our sense of calm. Daylight, good air, natural materials and a little room to retreat all make a real difference to how we feel at home and at work. Today feels really Autumnal, I was out early and wised I had a scarf! This afternoon is banana bread recipe, coffee and the sofa.

At Matthews Rea we believe wellbeing should be designed in from the start, not added on afterwards. if we can help with making your home a sanctuary, please get in touch.

And please, take a moment today to notice how your space makes you feel, and reach out to someone who might need it.

If you’re struggling, you don’t have to manage it alone.

This is a day we love, in the studio, working on schemes, setting out samples of materials. Fabrics, wood, leather, metal details.

At the top of the market, a home now needs to be the finest on the street, or the cheapest. Buyers want to walk in and live, with every detail considered, from the art on the walls to the glassware in the bar.

And increasingly, how a home makes you feel matters too. With our partners @thewellnessdesigngroup, we're designing for better sleep, cleaner air and calmer spaces.

Designed. Furnished. Finished.

Today the our Design Manager is using her expertise in hospitality design to good use with the new project we have, refurbishing an existing area in a large five star hotel. We are looking forward to presenting this to our clients and working closely with them to ensure we hit the brief. It’s a tricky space and needs careful thought and understanding of how F&B (food and beverage) really works in a hotel. Presentation coming soon!!

AI-generated interiors are everywhere right now. They are instant, endless and beautiful on a screen.

So we ran a little experiment. We took one of our real projects at first-fix stage (photo 1) and asked an AI tool to imagine the finished room (photo 2). We gave it the client guidelines we used to design the room.

Then we compared it to what we actually designed (photo 3).

The AI version? Confident. Polished. Also generic, with furniture that doesn't respond to the room's real proportions, materials with no relationship to the light coming through those actual windows. Yes its looks lovely, but its a little flat.

What it can't do is work through the hundred tiny decisions that a designer has to, the ones that come from designing within the space, and in relation to the rest of the property - it all has to flow. We think of the light, the orientation, the placement of each piece, the daily use. Why that particular rug, with its bespoke hand carved pattern made to an exact unusual size, why that scale of coffee table in a dark finish to ground it in the space, why the sofa is a corner shape to accommodate guests and sits exactly there and not a foot to the left (there is joinery and a large inset TV in front it, out of view). Pendant lights handmade in the UK. Hand-carved waney edge dining table from a small artisan workshop with bowtie joints. Artwork from a local artist, a commissioned sculpture in the window so you can see it from inside and out.

AI is a genuinely useful tool for early ideas. But there's still a real gap between an image of a beautiful room and one that actually works.

Swipe through and tell us — could you have spotted which one was real before we said?
