Parents & teens: Do you know what you’re riding? 🛑🚲 Town of Matthews Police shared some helpful tips this week at National Night Out!

Not every electric ride is classified as an e-bike, and the speed limits matter!

E-Bikes: Pedal‑powered bikes with a small motor (750 watts or less) that provides limited assistance with fully operable pedals, topping out around 20–28 mph.

E-Motos, Motorcycles & Mopeds: If it goes over 20mph but less than 30, it’s legally a moped or motorcycle under this ordinance. Other motorized two or three wheeled devices that do not qualify as an e-bike or moped are considered motorcycles.

Earlier this week, the Board of Commissioners adopted a new ordinance to help keep riders, pedestrians, and drivers safe. Here’s the quick rundown:

E‑Bikes
• Roads + greenways (20 mph max on paths)
• Sidewalks only for riders 16 & under and accompanying adults

E‑Scooters & Skateboards (PCVs)
• Roads with posted speed of 25 mph or less
• Sidewalk use along roads with a speed limit of 25mph or higher
• Not allowed before sunrise or after sunset

E‑Motos & Mopeds
• No sidewalks, greenways, or park trails
• Mopeds require age 16+, registration, and insurance (state law)

Night Riding
• White front light + red rear reflector/light required

Parents: Many fast electric devices sold online are legally mopeds or motorcycles with age and licensing rules, pay attention to what devices your child is using.

Stay safe, slow down, and yield to pedestrians!

Media Release - Matthews Alive Road Closures - 2026

September 3, 2026

In preparation for this year’s annual Matthews Alive festival, the Matthews Police Department would like to announce road closures, along with some safety tips and general event information.

ROAD CLOSURES

On Friday, September 4, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., South Trade Street will be closed from the intersection of East John Street to McDowell Street. Starting at 5:00 p.m. on the same day, this closure will be extended to Main Street for the remainder of the festival. This entire closure is expected to reopen by approximately 11:30 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026. Please plan for delays in advance if you will be traveling in this area during the four scheduled days of the festival. SAFETY TIPS

Stay hydrated;

Wear sunscreen;

Wear comfortable, adequate shoes to walk long distances in;

Try to pack as light as possible without carrying extra bags or items with you that will make it more difficult to walk long distances in the heat;

Protect yourself from theft by keeping items of value out of sight and on your person. (e.g., cash, cell phone).

**IF YOU SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING**

During the entirety of the festival, Matthews Police Department staff will be on hand implementing a comprehensive security plan utilizing specific measures to prioritize the safety of attendees.

Get the attention of any officer who may be near you;

Go to the Matthews Police Department tent that will be located at the corner of South Trade Street and Sadie Drive;

We’re proud to recognize Animal Control Officer Heather Kirkman as the Town of Matthews Employee of the Year for FY 2025–2026, an honor that reflects her deep commitment to both the people and animals of our community.

Heather approaches her work with genuine care, compassion, and a willingness to step in wherever she’s needed. From connecting residents with resources, partnering with rescue organizations, and organizing a spay & neuter clinic, she consistently looks beyond the immediate task to make a broader impact.

Her dedication to her coworkers and the Police Department is just as remarkable, she's always ready to help during staffing shortages, take on responsibilities outside her role, or come in on her day off when the community needs her. Her previous recognition as Officer of the Quarter and a CIVIC Award speaks volumes about the example she sets.

At the heart of Heather’s work is service — the kind that embodies our CIVIC values and strengthens the Matthews community every day.

Thank you, Officer Kirkman, for the difference you make.
We’re grateful to have you on our team. 💙 by @matthewspolice

🐾 Happy National Dog Day to our favorite canine, K9 Riggins! 🐾

In the seven months Riggins has been with us, he has brought countless smiles, plenty of laughter, and more than a little mischief. He has also helped us build meaningful connections with citizens, businesses, and fellow first responders throughout our community.

Riggins has already earned his Canine Good Citizen certification and become a certified explosives detection K9. He is now working toward his therapy dog certification. Not bad for seven months—but he will gladly tell you that he is obviously the smartest and best-looking dog around.

While Riggins may be our favorite—no bias here—we would be remiss if we didn’t recognize our other favorite four-legged friends: Ripp, Riot, Rhett, Roxie, Raff, and Hank…also known as Randy…from the Matthews Police Department.

Happy National Dog Day to all the hardworking dogs who protect, serve, support, comfort, and occasionally keep their handlers humble!

🎉Today’s meeting was extra special as we had the privilege of celebrating Matthews Police Officer of the Quarter, Officer Byron Cotto!

Officer Cotto consistently put Matthews residents first and is a wonderful example of what community service is all about. His commitment to serving and protecting our community, along with the care he shows the residents who call Matthews home, does not go unnoticed.

We were also very proud to recognize Sergeant Don Warren and Lieutenant Andrew Gillespie as Honorary Rotarians! Their service to Matthews and the relationships they have built with our club are wonderful examples of service above self in action.

👏🏼Congratulations, Officer Cotto, Lieutenant Gillespie, and Sergeant Warren! We are grateful for all you do for Matthews and proud to celebrate you!

🎉What a wonderful way to celebrate back to school!

This past Friday, we had an absolute blast serving our local families and helping students get ready for a great school year!

We were so grateful to be part of the Matthews Gives Back School Supply Drive, alongside the Matthews Police Department and the Matthews Help Center, and many other wonderful community organizations. Thanks to the generosity of our community, local students received school supplies and plenty of encouragement as they start a new school year!

Supporting children and families is at the heart of everything we as Kiwanians do and there is nothing better than seeing our community come together to make sure our children have what they need to succeed.

✏️We wish all of our students, teachers, and families a wonderful school year!
