Hello! I hope all of you had a good wrap-up to your 2023 and are looking forward to what 2024 will bring. I’m genuinely excited about new things happening this year, and I want to share some news about one of them:

On Tuesday, January 16th, I will begin releasing episodes of my new conversations podcast, “Matt O’Donnell Wants To Know”.

For my entire adult life, there are two things that people say to me more than anything else. The first is that I should be a contestant on Jeopardy. As the medium has come of age, the second is that I should have a podcast. I get it; I’m interested in a whole lot of stuff and when I get into something, I’m immediately plunging to the depths of what I can understand about it. I’ve never felt like I would be good at Jeopardy. (Knowledge and pressure don’t go well together for me.) For about the past year, though, I’ve felt like there was becoming a place in my life for a podcast.

My guests will be drawn from all kinds of places. I’ll be talking to writers, artists, chefs, coffee professionals, historians, people versed in current events, and because of the bounty of my career and passion, rest assured that there will be plenty of music-related folks to go around. I’ll be finding out what’s made them who they are. We’ll talk about what they know or are trying to learn. Let’s get interested in more of this big, wide word around us through the people deep into one little slice of it.

New episodes of “Matt O’Donnell Wants To Know” will be released every two weeks. You should be able to find a trailer for the show right now wherever you get your podcasts! I would love it if you go ahead and subscribe to the show so that the first episode gets delivered right to you on January 16th. There are also links in my bio to get the RSS feed to paste in your favorite app and YouTube page. Choose your own adventure!

I’m looking forward to this ride and hope you’ll enjoy coming along with me. See you soon. by @mattodonnell

“You’re nothing short of magical and beautiful to me…”

One month ago we finally got to meet our precious rainbow baby, Evangeline Mae.

Evangeline means “bearer of good news” and that is exactly what she has been for us.
After years of trying, heartbreak, and so much uncertainty, I still have a hard time really wrapping my mind around the fact that she is here.

What an incredible gift it is that we get to be her parents.

I love you, @mattodonnell
You have been the best partner I could hope for on this journey, and you are already such an amazing dad for our girl. by @mattodonnell

In my ever-continuing saga of “See @daptonerecords vinyl, buy Daptone vinyl”, I picked up the debut 7” by @lovedoverecords on @gabriel_rowland_gentesoul’s new imprint. While both sides kick ass, the bass line from the b-side, “Grind On”, hooked me instantly. This kind of music is where everything that my bass playing is about comes from. Props to the original omitted bass track, I’m just goofin’. taken in East Nashville, Tennessee by @mattodonnell

Made some pretty major upgrades to my studio over the past month and so I’m putting the new gear through its paces and permutations. Combine that with last week’s @themikeviola show banging around in my head and I thought I’d give his tune “The Bansch” some love (It’s fun as hell to play!) Huge credit to @jakesinclairnyc for his original part that I cut out here; I’m just riffing on his hard work. Gear sounds great to me! 😁 taken in East Nashville, Tennessee by @mattodonnell

I’ve been listening to a ton of @kidharpoon ‘s work lately. There’s a lot of his stuff to love (Harry Styles, Shawn Mendes, Maggie Rogers, etc.) but I couldn’t get this great song he co-wrote and co-produced for @florenceandthemachine out of my head today. His original bass track removed and admittedly not note for note, relax. by @mattodonnell

It’s release day for Matt O’Donnell Wants To Know! I’ve been tingling with electricity for this moment since I announced the show two weeks ago. Finishing up the music, getting the flow right, making sure of a bunch of things…it was a big mix of anxiety and thrilledness. Now here we are and the wheels are in motion to keep it coming bi-weekly!

The first talk is with my good friend Dave Jacquin. It’s available everywhere you find the podcasts you enjoy. It would mean a lot to me if you’d subscribe to the show, rate it, like it, whatever. I know you hear all the podcasters say it, but it’s true.

Even more, if you like the show, please tell your friends to enjoy it, as well. In this episode, you’ll get to learn a lot about life on tour at high level. Even more, there’s a lot involved about someone who’s incredible at building, nurturing, and sustaining a team.

This is the launch point and it’s going to just keep getting better. Let’s build something fun.

Here we go! by @mattodonnell

Really excited about being able to carve out some space in my new living room to pick up and play. Gig setups are important, but so is your home playing life.
