SO WHAT HAPPENED ON FRIDAY NIGHT?

A lucky group of 50 people sat with us in L’Enfant Gallery and rode a wave of surprising powerful emotions and took home a rediscovered sense of wonder.

Together we felt the music, shared the energy, marvelled in disbelief at the magic, and became part of a beautiful community of creative souls in A CITY THAT NEEDS AND WANTS THE ARTS now more than ever.

Thank you all those friends and strangers who came and supported our cast of artists.

IMMERSIVE.

UNPREDICTABLE.

UNFORGETTABLE.

L’Enfant Gallery was so honoured to welcome POLITE SOCIETY as they stepped out of New York City for the first time ever, and into the heart of Georgetown for one night only.

TANSY was our ringmaster host extraordinaire and guided us upstairs and downstairs, surrounded by endless paintings which adorn every wall.

The show unfolded in many unexpected and endlessly entertaining ways as the layers were removed.

MAGIC.

FUNNY.

EXCITING.

TANSY had gathered a lineup of skilled professionals; DC pianist @anthonypocetti and
@mattparkermusic on sax.

@evamystique is DC burlesque at its best. She shared her smile, gloves & feathers.

The world renowned & very funny magician @markclearview cannot be described in words. Ask someone who was here to explain.

Sensational vocals came in the form of Cunio, who took a moment away from @brassagainst to bring his black stilettos and blinding voice to us. We watched members of the audience close their eyes and tip their head back at the sound.

DC’s powerful mezzo soprano @emondragroff showed playful humour, accompanied by @idk.quentin and @miss.rachael.k.small and @elirykun glided amongst the sculpture in their tango embrace.

And TANSY showed us why she is an international burlesque icon.

Her elegance, style and grace of movement extended to her costume of threaded gold; gilded couture whispering Klimt’s kiss. An artwork in itself, crafted by @markgieringer - it looked at us with three carefully placed eyes… we stared back.

EYES WIDE OPEN.

Meet Matt Parker: saxophonist, composer, and collaborator with Music From The Sole 🎷

Matt brings a tireless explorative spirit to the room, blending deep jazz lineage with an openness to movement, rhythm, and collaboration. His relationship with the company grew from shared creative spaces and mutual respect, and over time has become an essential part of how we build, listen, and move together.

Rooted in a rich jazz tradition and influenced by mentors like Barry Harris, Matt approaches improvisation with both mastery and generosity. He’s not only a powerful musician, but a true collaborator: offering guidance, ideas, and steady support that strengthens the work from the inside out. His presence invites risk-taking, humor, focus, and care, shaping the energy of the room as much as the sound.

Matt’s dedication, showing up fully, traveling long distances, and investing deeply in the process, reflects the shared values that drive this work: commitment, trust, and joy in collective creation.

Witness Matt in our upcoming performance of House Is Open, Going Dark on March 1st at Joe’s Pub.

We’re proud to share the first glimpse of Little White Lies — What began as a spontaneous home recording became the heart of a new single.

Alan Hampton. A guitar. A bass. And the quiet power of a song that speaks softly and lingers sweetly long after.

Little White Lies arrives November 14th.

Some friends are for life… 👇👇

And to call @mattparkermusic a friend would be an understatement. I’m so blessed to have had the opportunity to play and live through many stages with this incredible musician and human, from hitting the streets to serenading “the elites,” but even more so that I can call him a brother and a spiritual liaison/guide.

This piece, titled WPT (Worlds Put Together), was from Matt’s debut album which I had the honor of being featured on and it actually became the album title as well. I’d like to say that I might have had something to do with that. 😇

If for some odd reason anyone that comes across this video hasn’t dove into the recordings and performances of this unequivocally singular talent, I encourage you to strap in and just get hip real quick.
His audacity to live and speak freely through the gifts that he’s been given inspires me to no end and has encouraged me, every time we’ve played, to explore the abandonment of rules and form that can only be achieved from an unrelenting and consistent commitment to the practice and craft of those very tenants. A willingness to question and challenge the “myth of normal” as a noble contribution to the betterment of those lucky enough to be witnesses and recipients of his music.
To embrace the spirit of improvisation as the ultimate path to expression, alignment, and enlightenment.

This show was over a decade ago at @slipperroomny and I must mention the other beast mode sages that I am also so lucky to have met and played with on multiple occasions -
@quinerly @songbody @josh.mease @stevewhipple

Looking forward to our next meeting…

First They Came – A Performance in Three Movements
by Reggie Watkins & Matt Parker

First They Came is a 14-minute live performance that blends jazz, poetry, and protest into a single arc of musical resistance. Captured during the Rivers album release concert at Carnegie Music Hall in Carnegie, PA, the piece unfolds in three parts: Part One is a improvised drone featuring Matt Parker.
Part two is a recitation of Pastor Martin Niemöller’s haunting post-WWII poem “First They Came,” and Part Three is a powerful interpretation of McCoy Tyner’s “Contemplation.”

Trombonist Reggie Watkins delivers Niemöller’s words with quiet intensity, underscored by a shifting soundscape led by saxophonist Matt Parker. The ensemble builds tension and release through deep listening, letting silence, texture, and tone speak as loudly as melody. What begins as meditative becomes unflinching—an urgent call to awareness in an era still shaped by silence and complicity.

Performed live, First They Came is both a tribute and a warning. It invites listeners not only to remember history but to feel it resonate—through breath, brass, and raw vibration.

Michael Bernabe – piano
Eli Naragon – bass
Jason Washington Jr. – drums
