Since getting back into paragliding last summer, I’ve mainly been motivated for using it as a tool in the mountains for descending, specifically after technical climbing. On July 3rd, I finally got to put the idea to the test on a backyard alpine peak with @wasatchwerbz and had an absolute blast! Ben and the rest of the team at @skyrun_co has been instrumental for mentoring me and providing stoke, can’t thank them enough! Some Stats: ~12lb packs (say what?!), 4am start, 3:30hr approach to base of climb, 1:30hr to climb Lowe Route (5.8, 3 pitches), met up with @emmettitoi on top, all 3 of us launched a little after 9am, sub 6hrs round trip. @ozoneparagliders F-Lite 2 harness + @niviukparagliders Skin 4P 16m wing.Music: Eiffel 65 - “Dub in Life”. One of my favorite bands as a 7-8yr old, somehow stumbled back on them and have been reminiscing hard. Any other 90’s kids that were a fan of Eiffel 65 back in the day (or now)?!#paragliding #hikeandfly #climbing #utah #lonepeak by @mattrandall9

Whitney East Buttress + Russell Fishhook AreteHad climbed the East Buttress in 2023 w/ @g_cully55 with ski gear, so I knew it was a secure and fun route. Getting down the north face without ski gear was neither secure nor fun hahaSoloing up the fishhook arete was the hardest onsight soloing I’ve done (5.8-9, not sure if I did the 5.9 starting pitch), and while it felt really good and was truly fun, I don’t intend to make it a habit. I enjoy soloing because it is amazing to move efficiently and cover ground with not much on your back, but the consequences (should) make one consider their margins, often. I’m proud and psyched I did it of course, but similar to my relationship with ice climbing, my goals are long term and flirting with my limits in this capacity for short term “gains” seems like “asking for it” 🤷‍♂️Regardless, a wildly enjoyable type 1 fun day on two amazing routes! by @mattrandall9

An exceptional trip to the Tetons recently with @paul_barish climbing the “Jackson-Rickert Crack” (5.10 X) and “Wooden Ships” (5.10- R) on the GrandWe had an absolute blast sleeping at the lower saddle and although we did climbs with R and X rated pitches, it overall felt quite casual and relaxed and has me sold on establishing high camps vs single pushesMuch more than the climbing, the quality time with a great friend was awesome and had us laughing the entire time. “Link in bio” for a YouTube video documenting the silliness of the first 2 days of the trip by @mattrandall9

Mt Ogden Climb-N-Fly: “Gray Slabs” (5.9, 11p) w/ @wasatchwerbz Another fun linkup that I’d highly recommend! A rompy climb with the crux right off the ground and lots of fun climbing/scrambling to the summit. Plenty of launch/landing options. Also, Ben and I climbed Devil’s Castle via the “Black Streak” (5.10a/b, 7p) and then flew off Sugarloaf Mountain (or Baldy) the day after Lone Peak. Another highly recommended one, as it’s more of an evening flight, so you can start climbing in the late afternoon and have plenty of time (low stress)Excited to continue to build competence/confidence with flying and apply this style to new venues. Canada soon… To be continued#paragliding #climbing #hikeandfly #utah #snowbasin by @mattrandall9

The Grand Traverse with @g_cully55 a couple weekends agoWe’ve had this somewhat on the radar for a few years and Garrett finally got me to commit this year lolI’ve done much more skiing in the Tetons than hiking/climbing, so the only Grand Traverse terrain I’d been on in summer was going down the Owen Spaulding (after the exum). Luckily, Garrett had done pretty much everything but the East Prong to Grand, and we got some solid beta spray downs from plenty of folks (thanks @kelsey_rex @benjifarrar @scampbell890 @rye_reichert_)We opted to bring 2x 30m radlines and some gear to do raps and simul climb the terrain from gunsight -> grandstand and the N ridge/italian cracks of the grand. While I’m glad we brought the rope/harnesses/gear and were conservative/gave it respect, I’d leave it behind next time. Getting down the raps sans-rope and all of the climbing is quite straight forward if you’re comfy on 5.7 terrain solo.Water at the lower saddle was a light trickle, so water may be a crux now for anyone trying to do it still this year.We played tag with a group from Driggs, ID (Chase and Oliver) and shared the last hike up to Nez Perce before “yogging” down. Was nice to share some time with another party. All in all a very enjoyable day. We both felt pretty darn good all day and moved at an easy pace. We both were surprised at how good we felt afterward and the next morning, but we definitely had lingering fatigue over the next few days, making me very excited to slow down on the big days and get back to smaller efforts. It’s been an amazing summer!Cheers to @g_cully55 for getting me on this! Was an absolute blast and I always love our silly days out! P.S. thanks for the car snuggles (sorry @paige.leland.9 😜) by @mattrandall9

Pingora NE Face (5.8+) ➡️ Cirque of the Towers Traverse (5.8)One of the best and most enjoyable days I’ve had. Felt great, did some amazing climbing, and everything went smoothly. Soloing the NE face of Pingora was the toughest “onsight” solo I’ve done, but it all felt really good. That said, I don’t want to make a habit of onsight soloing harder than 5.7. I’m psyched to have done this, but (hopefully) wise enough to pump the brakes and not feel the need to continually push the bar.Having done the cirque traverse 2 times prior, this part was pure type 1 and went very smooth. I finally did the 5.8 mantle to the S summit of Sharksnose and this made the raps to block tower sooooo easy, highly recommend! I’m feeling fitter than ever and my body has been holding up great this summer. I was able to jog most of the approach and exit which made for a pretty “chill” day out. I got back to my car just under 16hrs and even had time/energy to drive 4.5hrs home and sleep in my bed 🙌 My 1st cirque traverse was in 2020 (1st year climbing) and took 25hrs without tagging the hiking peaks. My 2nd one was in 2023 with @noah.grage and we took just under 20hrs but messed up some of the raps, particularly the ones off snarksnose (do the 5.8 mantle and rap off the S summit!). Psyched to add on a 50 classic climb to start it AND shave off 4 hours, all at a casual zone 1 pace. Progress and perspective is fun! by @mattrandall9

Temple-Gayley-Sill-Polumonium—North Palisade-Starlight-Thunderbolt TraverseWhen I rented a room in Bishop for July, I didn’t have any set plans besides scratching the surface of eastern Sierra summer activities. I drew some well-known and fun climbs on my map and started seeing what I could piece togetherThere are many popular ridge traverses here and the “Sill to thunderbolt” one stuck out to me because you can very logically access Mt Sill’s summit via the awesome (but short!) Swiss Arete, and then do the traverse in reverseNot only that, but you can also add on any of the climbs up Temple Crag. Going solo, I decided on a well travelled moderate, Venusian Blind, in order to stay well within my personal marginsIt ended up being a perfect day of fun moderate climbing and physical output. The only thing that went “wrong” with the day was telling my visiting friend @afernandez84916 that I’d be done by 5-6pm… I didn’t get back to my car until 9pm and I ran (ie shuffled) the entire exit hahaThis place continues to boggle my mind, and as I mentioned, I am barely scratching the surface 🤯*Watch the beginning of the video to see the little friend I made while leaving Bishop at 3:30am* by @mattrandall9

Countless friends, 2 cousins’ weddings, 6 new climbs (RMNP/Pikes), 1 “11b” onsight, 1 friend bash/get together, 1 presentation with an OG partner, a 14er attempt, and 1 hot nights sleep at a rest stop in Utah’s desert 🥵Truly thankful for the CO family and friends. It was really good to see a lot of you and spend quality time :)Summer has been amazing so far! Recently moved (still in SLC) and currently headed out to the Eastern Sierra for the rest of July! Quality time in what has quickly become one of my favorite ranges and states a few weeks back. Long (for me) days and some fun moderate solo climbs. It is truly nice to go light and fast (relatively haha) and even better when your body seems to handle it well. Summer break is off to a nice start :) As always, a huge thank you to @chris_budge and Dave for hosting me. Truly enjoy spending time with you guys! by @mattrandall9
