POSTS STORIES REELS

I visited Emmanuel Awuni at his South London studio to photograph new works ahead of his joint show at Gallery Magnin-A in Paris.

Traces of the Living runs from 11 June - 1 August at Gallery Magnin-A, 118 Boulevard Richard-Lenoir, 75011 Paris

Blind printing in Japanese Prints.

I have been photographing Japanese prints for many years. Some of my favourites to work on are prints that contain areas of embossing - This technique of ‘blind-printing’, either Karazuri (空摺) or Kimedashi (極出) is a technique where a design is impressed into paper without the use of ink.

To bring out the embossing I use lighting techniques to reveal the texture which would be lost by using traditional copy lighting. In post-production I then combine this texture shot with the version with standard lighting. This results in an evenly lit reproduction of the print with the embossed areas clearly standing out. The best of both worlds.

I can photograph Japanese Prints and other works on paper where collections are kept or in my home studio by arrangement.

Example 1. UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE (1797-1858), Shimotsuke province: Mount Nikko, Urami Waterfall, 1853

Example 2. OHARA KOSON (1877-1945), Cockatoo and Pomegranate, circa 1927

This Saturday 5th of July, from 1:00 to 2:00pm at Vision London @visionartplatform I’ll be hosting an exhibition talk moderated by @emilycsteer One of the participating artists is Anita Taylor @anitataylor_ :

Anita Taylor is an artist and Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College, University of Dundee, Scotland. She is the founding director of the annual Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize (established in 1994) and founded Drawing Projects UK in 2009 (www.drawingprojects.uk). Drawing has always been central to her practice—as an artist, educator, researcher, curator, and writer—and she is a passionate advocate for drawing as a means of communication, inquiry, and expression.

Her work has been widely exhibited in the UK and internationally. Recent solo exhibitions include presentations at Wells Cathedral, The Customs House in South Shields, DRAWN (Wunderkammer, Arts Council England), and William Wright Artists Projects in Sydney. She is co-author of Drawing (Cassell Illustrated), and has written for The Guardian, Crafts Arts International, RA Magazine, with interviews published in Interalia, Studio International, Times Higher Education, and the British Library Sound Archive. Her work is held in the collections of the V&A and Jerwood.

I worked with award winning stained glass artist: Cathy Lee to capture the incredible detail and storytelling of one of her most recent pieces. The Train.

This video adds motion and a bespoke soundscape to the panels which are made of two layers. In front, the painting of the train and behind showing inside the carriage - the shapes of the people Cathy observes using the tube.

We used motion control to move the camera along the length of the tryptich, picking out the figures and details of the tube train with remote, motorised focus control. The panels were lit mainly from behind with a small amount of light from the front to show the shape of the lead.

Cathy and I colaborated on the soundscape using recordings we both made on various trips on the London Underground.

A pleasure as always to photograph Ione and Mann’s most recent exhibition: Thread Suns.

Thread Suns is currently open
A rhythmic dialogue between two remarkable artists, @annnahigggins and @aimeeparrott, whose practices, although distinctively different, reside at the threshold between the tangible and what is intuitively felt.

This video was commissioned by Cathy Lee who is an award winning architectural stained glass artist and craftswomen.

We wanted to film the work as if an observer were leaning in and peering through the various windows to the vignettes of daily life captured inside.

We worked toward a soundtrack including random TV show clips, a hoover, a toppling wine glass and a bass heavy tune muffled and distorted as if coming through the wall from a neighbors flat.

Here are some words from Cathy about the Tower Block.

This diptych is part of a series of work that delights in the voyeurism of daily life. This tower block is home to me, to you(?) and to our neighbours but we know little of each other. Now you have the chance to peek through the windows and find hiding inside; places of love, fear, laughter, loneliness, anger, sex and television. Familiar, sad, amusing and odd.
Stained glass is an unusual but perfect medium to show domesticity: it is a window to our lives. You are invited to look through this window of windows and find out what's happening behind them.

Adult and Juvenile Allosaurus | Auction Estimate £5,000,000 – £8,000,000

What could be better than being asked to photograph a dinosaur? Well.. being asked to photograph 3 Dinosaurs of course! (See other post)

I’ve had to keep quiet about this project until the sale was confirmed but very pleased to be able to share these images now. It will be interesting to see how they do at auction tomorrow (12th December 2024) at Christie’s London sale room.

This was certainly the biggest shoot I had undertaken in my 13 years freelancing for Christie’s and quite a contrast from shooting jewellery in the weeks before!

Many thanks to
