Peckforton Castle, it’s one of the castles that is a stately home built to look like a castle in the Victorian era. It’s only about 175 years old, it’s been a home, a war time refuge for disabled children, a tourist venue and now a hotel and wedding venue. It’s also used as a filming location for Doctor Who, The Time Warrior and the other 1991 Robin Hood film (the better one, Patrick Bergin and Uma Thurman) Fab hotel, now I can say I’ve spent a night in a Castle. Helen and I have been to Crewe Hall this afternoon to celebrate 29 years since our first date, even though I’ve lived in the area most of my life I’ve never been before and have wanted go for ages. Crewe Hall was the seat of the Crewe family from the early 1600’s until the 1930’s. The Crewe family sold the estate to the Duchy of Lancaster crown estates, the War Department took it over in 1939 as a training camp for Canadian, Australian and eventually American troops. In 1943 the house became Camp 191, a Prisoner of War camp for high ranking German Officers, with over 2000 captured officers held in the house and grounds. There were a number of satellite camps all around the area, the last one demolished only a few years ago at Englesea Brook down the road. After the war, Calmic, a pharmaceutical company took over the Hall and grounds and in 1959 well known friend of all parents Calpol was invented and made here. CAL from Calmic and POL from Paracetamol, Calpol is still the go to paracetamol product for children. Calmic was bought by The Wellcome Foundation and production and research continued until 1995 when Glaxo swallowed Wellcome up.
