Familiar face, new role!

Matt Bradley is now the Bears’ Director of Player Development.

“I’m excited to be back at Cal and to work with student-athletes who were once in my shoes. I’m dedicated to helping prepare our players to compete and win under Coach Madsen, while working closely with the staff to support the program in every way possible.”

Early Retirement:
I announce this with a smile and a sense of peace I haven’t felt in years. Since a kid I’ve always loved to compete and prove I was worthy of being respected. Growing up in San Bernardino I was faced with so many challenges and I always wanted to prove that I could overcome them to others to promote my self worth. That was my driving force when it came to basketball. I spent countless hours at the local gym growing up and didn’t hang out with friends out of school or do no other social activities until college. This led to my growth as an athlete on the court and why I wanted to and was also able to compete amongst the best players in college. I loved Basketball all the way up till Covid-19. This pandemic took away basketball from me and I was left feeling hopeless and lost. I was depressed and devastated that the biggest thing I loved could be taken away just like that. At my lowest point is when I came to the realization that my worth shouldn’t be in something that could be wiped away in an instant. And at that moment my love for the game completely changed and since then my success as a player slowly began to decline. Post pandemic I was able to survive as an athlete due to all my prior work and ability to wanting to compete since a kid but I knew internally that feeling I once had was gone. I’ve “almost” quit so many times since then and I’m glad I pushed through all those moments back then because I’ve experienced so many special things and special people that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I’m 25 and I’m ready for the next stage of my life where I take all of the energy that I put into basketball and pour it into my family, my relationships, my faith, and my next career. Thank you to everyone that has been on this journey with me and I’m sorry to anybody I may have treated poorly through these past years. I was hurt and confused about the biggest thing in my life conflicting so many other areas of my life. I am excited to step into this new identity in Christ and life. Btw I will be the nastiest men’s league player in the country and I’m ok with that 😭. by @mattyjb3
