Half Marathon PR 🏁

1:12:51

I had no warmup and no real chance to get one in standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the crowd, so I honestly had no idea how this race would go.

The first mile clicked off in 5:40 and it felt like I was jogging. I settled into 5:35 pace through six miles, then started negative splitting into the 5:20s. The race didn’t really get hard until the final mile.

Then out of nowhere, a guy pulled alongside me and said, “Sub 1:13?” We pushed to the line together and closed in 5:18 pace.

I crossed stunned.

This feels like one of the biggest breakthroughs of my running journey. Six months of collegiate races, road races, high mileage, and doing the boring things every single day led to this moment.

Almost a 5-minute half marathon PR.

The ceiling just got a lot higher, and Berlin is looking really exciting.

Sub-2:30, we’re coming. Stay tuned.

Strides: the simplest workout you’re probably skipping.

Elite runners do strides year-round—and it’s not because they’re trying to get tired.

What are strides?
Strides are short accelerations of about 15–30 seconds, where you gradually build to roughly mile to 3K effort, then slow back down. They should feel smooth, fast, and relaxed—not like a sprint.

Why do elites do them?
🏃 Improve running economy by teaching your body to move more efficiently.
⚡ Recruit fast-twitch muscle fibers without creating much fatigue.
🧠 Reinforce good mechanics and quick turnover.
đŸ”„ Keep your legs feeling sharp between workouts and races.

The best part? You get faster with almost no recovery cost.

Try this: After an easy run, do 4–8 strides with full recovery by walking or jogging 45–90 seconds between each one. Focus on staying relaxed and controlled.

Sometimes the smallest pieces of training make the biggest difference.

“Why you’re secretly getting slower at running
”

Reasons:

1. You’re running every easy run too hard.
2. You’re never increasing your weekly mileage.
3. You skip threshold workouts.
4. You’re under-fueling before and after runs.
5. You’re not sleeping enough to recover.
6. You race every workout instead of training.
7. You never take recovery weeks.
8. You’re always chasing pace instead of training by effort.
9. You’re inconsistent—you train hard for two weeks, then miss a week.
10. You avoid strength training and become less durable.

Recovery matters. A simple rule is 60–90 seconds after 200–400 m reps, 90 seconds–2 minutes after 600 m reps, 2 minutes after 800 m reps, 2–3 minutes after 1K reps, 3–4 minutes after mile repeats, and 1–3 minutes after threshold intervals. Recover just enough to hit the next rep with good quality—not so much that you’re completely fresh.
