11 YEARS SOBER

Feels like a lifetime ago at this point. Every year, I spend a great deal of time reflecting what I've done or learned. I think this year I finally started to accept that I can be proud of myself. And maybe the 2nd chance I was given really is going to mean something.

I can't help but feel so fortunate to be where I am, with all of you. There are many of you that reach out, take your time to talk to me, and I can't stress how much it means. Most of the time I find it difficult to live in the present. To feel like people actually want me around. To feel worthy of real admiration. And I want to thank those closest to me. For keeping me safe. Helping me grow. And those who have afforded me the opportunities to give back to something, to rebalance the scales.

I reffed 20 meets this year. Met so many strong and wonderful people. Gained real mentorship and guidance. The opportunity to be part of your big day is not something I'll ever take for granted. This is a version of me I would have never dreamed of all those years ago, strung out, withdrawing, thinking it be best to just shut the lights out for good.

If I could back and tell that Matt his life is going to become something that he could be proud of, that one day we will pay it forward, and help people be the strongest versions of themselves. The strength I was looking for to pull myself up off that floor in Tucson 2014.

Thank you all, to those near and far. And to those I meet along the way. I promise you I am here if you need me. I'll continue to try my dang best. To another year of improvement. Be kind to one another. Give something back. Protect your mental health. Check on your friends. Touch some grass. Find joy in others victories. There is enough shine for all of us. Thank you for letting me bask in yours and allowing me some of my own.

2.5 million stone blocks..4,600 years old, and the last remaining ancient Seven Wonders of the World.

For over 20 years, I've been waiting to be in this very spot. To say it was mesmeric is an understatement. @travel_with_abby made it from a childhood dream to reality.

🚨 '25 USAPL Raw Nationals Recap 🚨

S/o to all the real ones in my corner, my community, friends, family, teammates, spotters, staff, and federation. The unwavering support is more than I deserve.

Honestly, you heard the recap, trash. Burned hella time and money to be out here. Didn't get the chance to show out no fault of my own or the federation. Announcements were made and confirmed by other coaches I spoke with.

Im moving on, this aint over by a long shot. Heading home to put my head down and train. Nats '26 will happen. I will be back with my Las Vegas Community, lets double the amount of lifters and show the country what we are made of. Sharing the platform as 4 Vegas lifters was a big deal and I'm honored to share that with 3 absolute dawgs.

650 deadlift is nothing when you dont even squat. And why would I even be sore the next day when I didn't? Super funny right.

Thank you all again and I can't stress enough how much I value my time and opportunities with USA Powerlifting. taken in Atlanta, Georgia by @mattysac

A pulse check.

After USAPL West Regionals as Technical Secretary and 2 days/4 sessions on sides at the Olympia. I think I'm trying to process this inflection point I feel that I am at. By end of day this past Saturday I wanted nothing more than to just run away to the outsides and catch my breath.

But this singular photo from those two weekends is the culmination of why I do this. Being a small piece of other's success. A smile and some kind words of encouragement at weigh-ins at 530am can go a long way for someone. Positive feedback in a tough situation. Making sure your staff feel seen and heard. Like a team and a peer, not a subordinate. Because you never know what people are shouldering off the platform. That is lifter friendly.

Maybe I am unwell idk. Which can mean many different things at times. And maybe thats ok for now. Maybe its another chapter of my life opening. God knows I have felt all this before. It's a bit scary, but also exciting. And if that means lean into it more, well I know myself, I will. Both personally and professionally. But, as I do, I will maintain my drive to always meet a person of this sport with a smile. And why. Because its probably all I needed those years ago when I imploded my entire life.

So from your friendly neighborhood referee Matty, if you need anything, you come find me.

An honor to have witnessed @aquiyess at the American Pro 4. I have judged him multiple times at this point and he always brings ferocity, professionalism, and true attention to standards. And where was Chris this weekend, in the crowd at USAPL West Regionals supporting his friends and community. Like a real Pro should. These photos show the solidarity and respect in our sport. From athlete to judge. Two Vegas lifters across the country at that meet demonstrating what our community has. It shows what we need to continue to do.

This will always be about lifting others up. Not lifting weights. Real champions lift those around them with support and kindness. My favorite piece of one rulebook, Being lifter friendly and following the rules are not mutually exclusive ideas. This is a component that should be held to the highest by all federations, volunteers, coaches, and athletes.

No matter where I am in the country, how absolutely exhausted I might be, frustrated, or stressed, being lifter friendly is always at the forefront of my mind. A smile goes a long way for some, and we never know what someone may be shouldering as they prepare to step on that platform for their 9 minutes.

Being kind is real strength.

I’ve pulled back from posting client work lately. That shine is theirs, not mine. But I want to talk about doing what it takes.

Matty does everything right. Follows the program. Listens. Adapts. Macros, water, steps: dialed in daily.

At our first Nationals together. It went well, but we learned even more. Since then:

🔺 Squat: 529 → 570
🔺 Bench: 331 → 355
🔺 Deadlift: 644 → 675
🔺 Total: 1500 → 1600+

Over 100lbs added, just by finding what works for him and running with it. One SBD day became three. Positioning and technique keep unlocking more, and we’re not close to done.

We also moved up a weight class the smart way. About half a pound a week, only 4-5lbs gained so far for that kind of progress.

And Matty’s not 20. He’s in his 30s. This is what consistency and the right plan look like at any age.

Stuck lifters: don’t fire your coach, talk to them first. Tell them what you’re doing and not doing. Communication solves more plateaus than a new program does.

Matty, so proud of these last couple blocks. December’s going to be special. A 600 squat and 700 deadlift? Just a matter of time. by @mattysac
