The end of an era.
I’m officially closing the book on 22Sound.

For 13 years, I devoted myself to learning the craft of film sound, from student films to blockbuster films and everything in between. I’ve worked with the most incredible teams, on some of the most advanced equipment available, in some of the most inhospitable environments I could possibly imagine. I’ve got to learn all about post production, editing, cameras, lenses, microphones, product design, software development, and explored how I could lend my technical and creative talents to each production. All the while being paid to capture A-level talent delivering unreal performances that leave you wondering how someone can summon those emotions in a sound stage converted from a refrigerated warehouse surrounded by sawdust and electrical cables.

I love film sound and I’ll always be part of the community in some way, but letting go of the old 22Sound identity is the best way for me to grow as an individual into the next chapter of life. by @mattyxl_

One of my biggest goals recently has been to get back on a snowboard after a decade away from the sport.

A few years ago I had a knee injury that held me back from being as active and adventurous as I knew I wanted to be. I had gone to physio for upwards of two years and despite the effort and cost, it seemed like the best I could hope for was for my knee to not get any worse, but daily pain kept me from running, hiking, even long walks would leave me sore for hours. So when I was given the option for surgery, I made the decision to take my fitness and recovery seriously with hopes that I could return to doing the things I loved.

This year I finally fulfilled my goal of getting back on the board and even though I was expecting to be rusty AF, to my surprise, I picked up right where I left off. I even bought a new board setup to invest in my love of the sport.

Big thanks to @petegodden, @sam0ne7, @sohailtahan and others who have gone riding with me, Vancouver’s beautiful local mountains have blown my mind this season, the hard work paid off 🙌🏂🏔️💪 taken in Cypress Mountain by @mattyxl_

In a major plot twist, while in the final stretch of prepping for season 2 of Fire Country, I tore the whole cart apart and rebuilt it with some new equipment from Audio Wireless and @filmdevices. The DADM226-MK2 allows us to use each of the @lectrosonics DSQD receivers independently and shut them off as needed to conserve power rather than cascading the RF through each receiver. In my experience this has the bonus of a slightly lower noise floor with cleaner filtered RF. The real MVP of this rebuild has been the @filmdevices Rack-N-Bag Versa. Which now houses the @sounddevices 888 perfectly in a lightweight, solid customized rack. The build quality and tolerances of the Rack-N-Bag are UNREAL. Top shelf equipment, no pun intended. Season 2 of Fire Country is off to a roaring start 🔥 🔥 🔥 by @mattyxl_

As my team and I begin to embark on this year’s projects, we got a huge surprise brought to my attention by @kyle_petty and @morrowsound. Seeing your name and face printed in a magazine alongside some of the absolute titans in the film sound industry is definitely a shock, and a humbling one. I’m proud and honoured to be sharing the career I love with such inspiring company.

Here’s a closer look at our @nativeinstruments Maschine+ playback setup 🚀
For the unique needs of @cw_legendsoftomorrow I’ll often perform the playback of dialogue cues which have been pre-recorded by one of our actors, this audio will be sent wirelessly from the mix rig to a speaker on set via @lectrosonics M2T and a DCHR mounted on the battery powered @bose speaker. This system incorporates well into our Dante M2R/M2T Duet IFB (IEM) setup, is fast and flexible to add to the @sounddevices Scorpio and CL16 combination for versatile routing options 🎧
The Maschine+ is at its core, a standalone hardware sampler, so all cues can be programmed from a memory card to prepare the session from anywhere AC power is present. If dialogue lines are uploaded from our Post Dept, I can prepare the session at home, then bring the rig in to set the next day and perform alongside our actors for a seamless and more emotionally impactful performance from our cast - who is then performing to a real actor’s voice, rather than a script supervisor who has other important work to focus on.
This task requires some extra focus on my part but I find that the challenge helps to keep me sharp. Recently I’ve employed the same strategy using an @apple iPad Air and the Beatmaker 3 app. This has more portability and a slightly faster setup, but I find the Maschine+ lends a bit more confidence when production is rolling and an app crash can cost you and your production valuable time.

Ghostbusters Afterlife is officially out in theatres worldwide! This movie is going to make a ton of people extremely happy.
I’ve been a massive fan since I was a kid, so it’s not only incredible to see the story continue in such a heartfelt way, but seeing some of my mixing work play on the big screen for the first time ever - (especially on a blockbuster film like this) was unquestionably surreal.
Such a massive thanks to @morrowsound for inviting me to come work on the movie for those couple weeks in late 2019.
Everyone go see it if you haven’t already, and as long as it’s safe to do so! 👻
