Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) Deputy Administrator Francis Kau demonstrates earthquake safety procedures as part of the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill.

During an earthquake, remember to Drop, Cover and Hold On:
* Drop: Get down on your hands and knees.
* Cover: Protect your head and neck. Take shelter under a sturdy table or desk, if one is nearby.
* Hold On: Stay in place and hold on to your shelter until the shaking stops.

Practicing these steps can help you stay prepared and protect yourself and others during an earthquake.

At the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), preparedness starts with its own team.

Under the leadership of MEMA Administrator Amos Lonokailua-Hewett, staff regularly participate in tabletop exercises and scenario-based training designed to strengthen coordination, communication and emergency response capabilities.

MEMA sections routinely practice their roles and responsibilities and work through realistic emergency scenarios to identify opportunities for improvement and strengthen operational readiness. From planning and operations to logistics, finance and external affairs, every team member plays a critical role in effective emergency response.

In July 2026, MEMA celebrated a significant milestone with the blessing of its new Maui Emergency Operations Center (MEOC) in Wailuku. The facility provides a centralized space for emergency coordination, collaboration and training, further strengthening the agency’s ability to prepare for and respond to emergencies across Maui County.

As MEMA continues to grow, the agency remains committed to continuous training, learning and refining its capabilities to better serve the people of Maui County.

Preparedness begins long before an emergency occurs.

This week the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) joined American Medical Response (AMR), the Maui Fire Department, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), The Wildfire Conservancy and other community partners for a wildfire awareness and training event in Pāʻia.

Held at Pāʻia Park, the event focused on wildfire awareness, emergency preparedness and community safety.

Attendees also had the opportunity to observe a live firefighter training demonstration in the nearby Skill Village neighborhood, highlighting firefighting techniques and emergency response operations in a residential setting.

Events like these provide valuable opportunities to strengthen partnerships, engage with residents and promote community preparedness.

Mahalo to all the participating agencies, organizations and community members for their continued commitment to building a safer, more resilient Maui County.

Mahalo to everyone who participated. The 30-hour training was open to people ages 16 and older, with no prior experience required.

Through the CERT curriculum, participants gained essential skills in disaster preparedness, disaster medical operations, fire safety, light search and rescue, and team organization. The training equipped participants to safely assist their communities during emergencies and disasters.

The monthly test of the all-hazard Statewide Outdoor Warning Siren System is scheduled for Thursday , October 1, 2026, at 11:45 a.m. The siren test will be coordinated with a test of the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System. During this monthly test, all Statewide Outdoor Warning Sirens will sound a one-minute Attention Alert Signal (steady tone).

A test of the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System is conducted at roughly the same time as the monthly siren sounding, in cooperation with the Hawai‘i broadcast industry. There will be no exercise or drill accompanying the test.

The all-hazard Outdoor Siren Warning System for Public Safety is one part of the Hawai‘i Statewide Alert and Warning System used to notify the public during emergencies. If you hear this siren tone in circumstances other than a test, follow emergency information and instructions provided by official government channels. These may be in the form of a local radio or television station broadcast and/or a cellular Wireless Emergency Alert. Wireless Emergency Alerts deliver sound-and-text warnings to compatible mobile cellular phones.

The Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alert notifications are sent via the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System, the nation’s alert and warning infrastructure, managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The public may contact Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to report siren operation issues through the main phone number 808-270-7285 or through https://www.mauisirens.com .

MEMA also encourages the public to sign up for MEMA Alerts and download the Genasys Protect app. More information can be found on MEMA’s website https://www.mauicounty.gov/MEMA . by @maui_ema
