Backyard Skatepark Tribute 🛹

Sad news that after 11 years, Backyard Skatepark is shutting down.

Here’s a little collection of photos I took between 2016–2018 during events and comps at the park. I haven’t been back since the pandemic, so going through these brought back a lot of nostalgia and made me realize how many skate events used to happen back then compared to now. Parang pag big compi either dito sa Backyard or sa MDSP 😂

Backyard will always be a part of Philippine skateboarding history. As one of the pioneers of privately funded skateparks, it helped build a space and community that contributed to the level Filipino skateboarding has reached today.

Maraming salamat, Backyard. taken in Backyard Skatepark by @mauihidalgo

A few snaps from last June 21, Go Skateboarding Day. 🛹📸

Funny how GSD is probably the only time each year I get to shoot skateboarding now. There was a time when skating and taking skate photos consumed me.

Back then, I’d usually plan shots with the skater and be pretty intentional about how the photo would turn out. This time, I did the opposite. No planning, no pressure—just walked around, went with the flow, and shot whatever felt right. It was a nice change.

I don’t get to skate as much anymore, but I still consider myself a skateboarder. I guess that never really goes away.

Big props to everyone at @tagaytayskateorg for a solid GSD, and huge thanks to @vansphilippines for always supporting the local skate scene. 🙌 taken in Tagaytay Oval and Sport Complex by @mauihidalgo

Throwing it back to the Nestlé Kitchen Series I shot with @studio_kamusta. An entire year of creating dishes that felt like lutong bahay: simple, comforting, and something anyone can easily make at home while keeping everything homey, modern, and approachable.
One of my favorite projects from 2022. Fun times with a fun team!

Back on the beverage game after a while.

Shot these refreshing flavors for Nomikashi, and it brought me back to my early studio days, back when I was still with BlacksheepManila @bendo_chan as an apprentice/assistant/junior photog. I used to shoot a lot of bottles back then, so this one's got a bit of nostalgia for me.

Always fun lighting up liquid, fruit, and ice trying to make them look so refreshing you’d want to grab a bottle and take a sip.

Big shoutout to @graivy_foodstylist , @omarmanundo , and the whole @conservakitchen food styling team. Art direction by the sneaky @043x1550, @imaginariumcreatives, art dept by @thatkidallie 👀 and everyone else who helped bring this to life. Salamuch ✨📸 by @mauihidalgo

@dwght.trndd landed the front board just in time—security pulled up, kicked the rock, grabbed the rail and simply said: "Bawal yan dito." 🚫🛹

Shoutout to @danibautistah for the light assist—poached his strobes for this one! Go peep his IG for his killer angle of the trick and the cameo of the 👮🏻 by @mauihidalgo

The future’s so bright, you might have to close your eyes just to take it all in. Watching you take this leap of faith, leaving behind over a decade in advertising to become a teacher is nothing short of inspiring. Kaya idol kita, for real! I’m always in your corner, cheering you on. Happy Birthday, @chill.crnl! Labyu 💖 taken in Planet Earth by @mauihidalgo
