🚨What I wish I knew before our first coyote encounter! 🚨

Coyotes are adapting to city life and may come closer to people than in the wild especially near food, water, and shelter but they are still wild animals. As they lose fear of humans, the risk of coyote aggression increases.

Coyotes are part of the natural ecosystem and safety starts with keeping your distance and protecting your dog. With awareness and preparation, encounters can end safely for everyone.

Hazing is the act of safely scaring a coyote away to reinforce its natural fear of humans. It doesn’t harm the animal. It uses loud noises, sudden movements, or visual intimidation to make the coyote leave the area.

Safely haze coyote at a distance:

❤️ Stay Calm & Stand Tall
Coyotes sense fear and weakness. Staying confident, upright, and assertive to prevent escalation.

❤️ Be loud & intimidating
Make yourself big, wave your arms, yell in a firm voice, and use a whistle or air horn to scare the coyote away.

❤️ Haze (scare away)
Advance confidently while yelling or making noise. Walk toward it slowly to make it uncomfortable, not cornered.

❤️ Pick up or act as barrier
Pick up small dogs or stand between your dog and the coyote to create a protective barrier.

❤️ Use deterrents
Loud sudden noise can startle and drive the coyote away. Clapping, stomping your feet, using a flashlight directly at their eyes to disorient it, or a pocket-sized alarm emits a high-pitched sound can deter wildlife. Toss rocks, sticks, or even water bottles near (but not at) the coyote.

❤️ Slowly back away
Maintain eye contact and back away slowly without turning your back on the coyote.

⚠️ Never run away or turn your back because coyotes instinctively pursue moving targets! ⚠️

Always stay alert, stay confident, and keep your dog safe out there!

Have you had to haze wildlife before?

⛔️ Keep our communities & wildlife safe: Share to help others identify sarcoptic mange! ⛔️

Coyote sightings in cities are becoming more common because of food, shelter, and fewer natural predators. Wildlife with mange may look thin, bald, or unafraid of people and struggling to survive.

Sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious skin disease from parasitic mites that spreads between coyotes, dogs, cats, wildlife even humans (scabies is temporary). The mites burrow into the skin, causing intense itching, inflammation, hair loss, and thick, crusty skin.

Hazing is a wildlife management technique used to encourage wild animals to stay wary of humans and avoid areas where they could come into conflict with people or pets. It doesn’t harm the coyote but uses deterrents to change behavior.

Awareness & Safety Tips:
❤️ Coyotes with mange may appear unusually bold and wander into neighborhoods.
❤️ Keep pets indoors or on a leash to prevent contact and potential disease spread.
❤️ Never approach or attempt to treat sick wildlife, do not medicate.
❤️ Safe hazing: make yourself look big, loud, and assertive to encourage the coyote to move away.
❤️ Carry deterrents like whistles, air horns, or flashlights to help guide them safely away.
❤️ Report sightings to local wildlife authorities for rehabilitation services.
❤️ Educate your neighbors about avoiding contact and keeping pets safe.

It’s heartbreaking to see a sick coyote but California law prohibits medicating or handling wildlife. DIY treatments can poison pets, harm protected species, and disrupt ecosystems. Report sightings to local wildlife authorities or rehab centers for safe, legal help.

⚠️ Never run away or turn your back because this could trigger their chase instinct.

Recognize and report. Coyotes are part of the ecosystem but with awareness and precautions: Your pets, community, and the wildlife can coexist safely.

Would you know what to do if you saw a coyote with mange?

😂 Maui is worth every penny! What’s yours?! 😂

Medical alert and response service dogs are life-changing companions. They detect medical crises early, respond during emergencies, and provide constant safety and independence for their handlers. By recognizing medical changes, preventing injury, reducing anxiety, and improving quality of life. The most priceless gift for their handlers.

🐕‍🦺 Life-saving alerts: Uncanny ability to sense changes in their handler’s body (heart rate spikes seizures or blood sugar drops) before the handler even notices, giving crucial time to act.

🐕‍🦺 Constant monitoring: They provide 24/7 vigilance for conditions that are unpredictable, giving a sense of security that no device can fully replicate.

🐕‍🦺 Immediate response: Some are trained to deliver medication, call for help, or guide their handler to safety during emergencies.

🐕‍🦺 Psychological support: Reduce fear, anxiety, adrenaline spikes, and isolation during stressful or unpredictable situations.

🐕‍🦺 Independence and confidence: They allow handlers to safely navigate daily life, maintain routines, and participate in activities they might otherwise avoid.

🐕‍🦺 Bond beyond utility: The bond between handler and dog often has therapeutic, motivating, and healing effects that go far beyond any financial calculation.

The time, safety, reassurance, and unconditional partnership to their handlers is truly priceless.

🥹 Did you know service dogs can detect medical changes before they happen? 🥹

Let’s celebrate Service Dog Awareness Month by featuring how service dogs can be task-trained to detect fainting, seizures, allergic reactions, and other medical emergencies. Maui naturally alerts and responds to my sudden elevated heart rate & helps prevent fainting caused by dysautonomia.

Dysautonomia is a chronic condition caused by a dysfunction of the nerves that regulate nonvoluntary body functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, temperature, and sweating.

Fainting (syncope) can be triggered by a sudden elevated heart rate, low blood pressure, or changes in blood flow. Medical alert and response service dogs can detect early warning signs before you even feel them, instinctively apply deep pressure therapy (DPT) helping prevent injury.

Deep pressure therapy is one of Maui’s trained tasks to stabilize body awareness, reduce stress and panic, & give the time needed to prevent a fall.

Why this matters:
Service dogs provide early detection, safety, and independence for people living with chronic conditions like dysautonomia, epilepsy, or diabetes making a life-changing impact for their handlers every day.

🩵 Scent Detection
Dogs have an extraordinary sense of smell. They can detect subtle chemical changes in the body like shifts in heart rate, blood pressure, or adrenaline before fainting, seizures, or allergic reactions, giving handlers time to take precautions or seek help.

🩵 Body Language
Service dogs read their handler’s posture, gait, and movements. Small changes like unsteadiness, sluggish movement, or altered breathing can signal fatigue, dizziness, or an impending medical event.

🩵 Physiological Changes
Dogs sense changes in heart rate, breathing patterns, or body temperature. These cues often happen minutes before a medical episode, allowing handlers time to prepare or prevent it.

😍 Behind every service dog is a handler relying on their life-saving work! 😍

September is National Service Dog Awareness Month! A time to honor service dogs and the invaluable support they provide to people with disabilities every day. These highly trained working dogs empower independence, enhance safety, and transform lives for millions of individuals.

Join us in celebrating service dogs, raising awareness about their crucial roles, and advocating for disability rights and accessibility.

Service dog etiquette is essential to ensure safety, independence, and respect for people with disabilities while allowing service dogs to perform their critical medical tasks.

Service Dog Etiquette Tips:

❤️ Leave pets at home unless it is a dog friendly store.
❤️ Speak to the handler, not the service dog. Handlers are the point of contact.
❤️ Do not distract a working service dog. Interrupting a dog on a life-saving task or alert can put the handler at risk.
❤️ Give the team space. Don’t startle, crowd, or approach a service dog in public.
❤️ Respect privacy. Never demand details about a handler’s disability; if they’re comfortable, they will share.
❤️ Ask before touching, photographing, or recording. Always get permission before interacting with a service dog or handler.

Service dogs undergo years of rigorous, task-specific training for disabilities often at significant expense. Unfortunately, many pets are falsely presented as service dogs, which puts genuine teams at risk. Please be courteous, these individuals are simply trying to stay safe and independent while managing disabling medical conditions.

Let’s celebrate service dogs and their life-changing impact, while raising awareness about the importance of disability accessibility and creating a more inclusive world for people with disabilities.

What’s one important service dog etiquette tip you think everyone should know?

Happy National Service Dog Month to all who celebrate!

🚨 Emboldened coyotes are approaching humans and dogs on leash head on - how to stay safe! 🚨

Urban coyotes are no longer just lurking in the shadows - many are bold enough to walk straight toward you and your dog without hesitation. Coyotes are most active from March through August, especially in areas with food, water, or shelter.

While coyotes once avoided people, they’re rapidly losing their fear - stalking dogs openly, sometimes even during daylight. If you walk a small dog, you’re at even greater risk.

Pet parents, be ready. Bold coyotes don’t bluff. You should immediately haze (scare away) the coyote to keep them fearful of humans and protect our pets.

How to haze a coyote if they approach you directly:

❤️ Get Big & Loud
Stand tall, wave your arms, shout, and make noise to appear threatening. Use a firm, deep voice not high-pitched screaming.

❤️ Use Deterrents
Carry a whistle, air horn, shaker can, or umbrella. These can startle coyotes and give you precious seconds to react.

❤️ Leash Up & Keep Close
Keep your dog on a non-retractable leash and close to your side. Don’t let them approach or chase the coyote.

❤️ Maintain Eye Contact
Stare directly at the coyote while you haze—it shows you’re not prey and can help keep them at bay.

❤️ Throw Small Objects (Without Harming)
Toss sticks, dirt clods, or water bottles near the coyote—not at—to encourage them to back off.

❤️ Never Turn Your Back or Run
Back away slowly while facing the coyote. Running can trigger their prey drive.

❤️ Report sightings
If coyote displays aggression, always report sightings to local wildlife authorities.

‼️ Pro-Tip: Carry multiple deterrents on your walk - safety isn’t optional when bold coyotes are around.

Has a coyote ever approached you and your pup directly?

⛔️ Share this reel to help others recognize sarcoptic mange in coyotes - let’s protect pets and wildlife! ⛔️

Heartbreaking to encounter a suffering coyote with severe mange. I report every sighting to wildlife authorities for rehabilitation resources but they have yet to take action. California wildlife laws prohibit public intervention - $25,000 fine.

Mange coyotes frequently wander our neighborhood & often are unafraid of people which is not only unsettling and sad.

Sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious skin disease caused by parasitic mites that spreads between coyotes, dogs, cats, wildlife - even humans. Left untreated, it causes:

❤️‍🩹 Severe fur loss, especially on the back, face, and legs
❤️‍🩹 Persistent scratching and biting break the skin, leading to open sores and bleeding open wounds
❤️‍🩹 Open wounds can become infected with bacteria and secondary infections, exacerbating the condition.
❤️‍🩹 Weight loss and weakness from struggling to hunt

HOW TO HAZE A COYOTE:

🚨 Pick up dog or act as barrier
Pick up your dog or stand between them and the coyote.
🚨 Make yourself BIG & LOUD
Stand tall, wave your arms, and yell Go away!
🚨 Use noise & motion
Shout, clap, toss rocks/sticks near (not at) the coyote, or use an air horn to startle and drive the coyote away.
🚨 Carry deterrents
Shine flashlight directly at their eyes to disorient it, whistles, pocket-sized alarms emit a high-pitched sound can deter wildlife.
🚨 Maintain eye contact
Stand tall, wave your arms, maintain eye contact.
🚨 Be persistent
If the coyote pauses or stops moving away, increase your hazing by getting louder and more aggressive.
🚨 Slowly back away
Keep your body facing the coyote at all times and take slow, steady steps backward while staying tall and calm.
🚨 Report sightings
Report directly to local wildlife authorities.

⚠️ Never run away or turn your back because this could trigger their chase instinct.

Have you seen a coyote with mange?
