POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

When you see the coolest photo from an underground punk show, how often do you wonder how many beers got spilled on the photographer to land that one night-defining image? Or when you’re scrolling through an Instagram post, how likely are you to ask about the style choices that encapsulate the spirit of the show?

New Times reached out to four music photographers to learn more about the stories behind the storytellers: Who are the people capturing the moments that create the visual archive of our music scene?

Swipe to meet them, or grab this week’s issue at a newsstand near you. Bonus: It doubles as a gnarly poster.

For years, I’ve been known for photographing the music scene, but I’ve spent just as long documenting the life that surrounds me.

Sometimes, I wonder if people can connect with the images I want to share outside of band pictures, and that’s where my imposter syndrome creeps in. I almost didn’t make it to the opening, but last night felt like validation—a reminder that my perspective beyond the music scene has a place, too.

For a moment, people got to see the hands of my mother and catch a glimpse of the little details that make her who she is.

Thank you @palmfilmlab / @whiterosemia for hosting and giving us a space to share our perspectives & interpretations of life, that time might otherwise take from us.

@churchills_pub turned 47 years old, and I can honestly say I spent a good decades of my youth photographing its different eras — the people, the shows, the renovations, and everything in between.

Those early years were truly wild times. But remember: it’s the people who give a venue its character and charm.

Can we compare this era of Churchill’s to the past? Honestly, it doesn’t really fucking matter. Things change. We grow, and we make room for the next generation to take over. Shit will always be different, but what matters is that it never loses sight of what it has always stood for: being one of the main foundations in the music scene.

Happy Birthday, Churchill’s. ❤️🎂

Thank you for being part of so many of my old memories — and for continuing to make new ones.

And, of course, thank you for making sure I would never, ever take a shit in your bathrooms.

My recap of @turnstileluvconnection Pt. 1

Those first three songs in the media pit go by so fast, and when the energy is this intense, sometimes all you want to do is put the camera down and just be present in it.

This is my 2nd time photographing them & I hope it won’t be the last.

The rain didn’t stand a chance against Turnstile fans on Sunday night.

The Baltimore hardcore band brought its Never Enough Tour to @FactoryTown_ on Sept. 20, transforming a venue better known for electronic music into a sprawling playground for mosh pits, crowd surfing, and sing-alongs. By the time Turnstile took the stage, even the rain-slicked concrete couldn’t stop fans from throwing themselves into the action.

Mother Nature even contributed some unexpected production value: A double rainbow appeared over Factory Town ahead of the show, an unusually picturesque backdrop for an evening of hardcore.

This is what hardcore looks like.

Hardcore is a statement. It’s unity. It’s ageless. It’s diverse. It’s friendship. It’s justice.

It’s about who’s holding you while you scream your favorite lyrics. Who’s going to carry you through the night when it’s all over. Who’s holding your hand in the middle of the chaos.

It’s about the people you surround yourself with—the ones who show up, who have your back, and who make you feel like you belong.

That’s hardcore.

Thank you @turnstileluvconnection
