Meet Marisa! On most days, you can find her zipping around Raleigh on her bike and exploring the city. Recently she has been enjoying the Commuter Bike Bus into downtown, organized by @Oaksandspokes along the greenway trail. In the office, Marisa works on projects ranging from hospitality and retail to office spaces, and she enjoys bringing her clients’ dreams to life while further enriching the community she loves. Marisa is also involved with the local @ncnoma chapter (National Organization of Minority Architects), volunteering at their annual summer architecture and design camp, Project Pipeline.

Architectural Designer Rachel Parks recently gave some of our staff a tour of the Boylan Pearce and WT Grant buildings on Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh. This complex project features unique historic elements, including a lightwell, grand skylights, and original leaded glass windows above Fayetteville St. Rachel highlighted several new features on the tour, including a rooftop addition leading to a future roof deck, an updated staircase using components of the historic stair, and a new wood storefront on Salisbury Street based on historic imagery.

Built for hospitality. Built for gathering.

We’re excited to share a closer look at Fullsteam ATC, an 11,600 SF transformation at American Tobacco Campus in Downtown Durham—bringing new life to an existing space and creating a home for brewing, dining, events, and gathering.

Working alongside Sundholm Studio, Maurer Architecture and United Restaurant Equipment, Gateway helped bring Fullsteam’s vision to life through detailed coordination of the architectural design, brewery and food service equipment, utilities, and MEP systems. From installation requirements to sequencing, every piece had to come together to support both day-to-day operations and the guest experience.

Fullsteam calls its new home “Durham’s Front Porch,” and the finished space lives up to that: a Public House and gathering place rooted in the Bull City, local food and drink, and bringing people together.

Whether you’re stopping in for a locally brewed pint, grabbing a bite, catching an event, or settling in with friends and family, go experience Fullsteam ATC for yourself!

Good people. Great projects. Great places to gather.

Gateway Plaza off of Crabtree Blvd in Raleigh is full of various tenants, becoming a hub for work, dining, and play! Most recently a fresh batch of new(ish) tenants has occupied their spaces. Working with these business owners to bring their projects to life and watching this area buzz with activity is why we do what we do!

After 4 years of grant applications, design, and construction we celebrated the ribbon-cutting and open house for this newly renovated downtown landmark. A new chapter for 16 W. Main Avenue, Taylorsville, NC.

Owned by the County and funded by an NC Commerce Rural Transformation Grant, the former bank and local Chamber of Commerce, now houses first-floor retail and upper-floor apartments aimed at attracting teachers. The first floor is now an expanded Kiley’s Sugar Shoppe. We’re proud to have been part of bringing this building back to life in downtown Taylorsville—and even prouder to see the community come together to celebrate it. by @maurerarchitecture

This summer, we welcomed Diversify Architecture fellows into the office to support their growth, share our perspective on the industry, and our approach to design. Diversify Architecture connects students with programs to increase awareness of the field, admission into universities, and follow-through in the licensure process.

During the fellows' visit, we talked about the firm's history and our mission, and walked through the building process by reviewing a few projects. We organized a site visit to the ongoing Boylan Pearce project, where students were able to see different phases of construction and discuss the process of historic tax credits.

Coming Soon: Little Bird in Downtown Wilmington

Chef Dean Neff and Lydia Clopton, owners of Seabird and Zora’s Market & Kitchen, are expanding their downtown footprint with Little Bird, a new restaurant and bar coming to 9 S. Front St., next door to Seabird.

Expected to open in early 2027, Little Bird will build on the team’s focus on sustainable seafood while bringing a new dining experience, daytime offerings, and additional space for private events to downtown.

The project will also breathe new life into the historic building at 9 S. Front St., restoring its long-hidden façade and creating additional dining and event space. Together, Seabird and Little Bird will offer expanded opportunities for private gatherings and special events.

We’re excited to see another historic downtown space brought back to life, thanks to the team at @maurerarchitecture and @oldschoolrebuilders

North Carolina Downtown Development Association (NCDDA) had its annual Large Cities Conference, where David Maurer, who serves as a Board Member, hosted a panel discussion with James Goodnight and Brian Wallace. The panel discussed multiple downtown properties - their history, restoration, and their contribution to downtown Wilmington. Attendees then toured
the Seabird Restaurant building, HQ for Untappd, and three other buildings currently under renovation - while learning about Historic Tax Credits and the value these buildings bring to the city.
