MAURICE AND MARVIN 🧡 Getting to experience our film on the big screen, surrounded by an audience, is something truly remarkable. Last Sunday, The Clairidge in Montclair, NJ, gave us the opportunity to share our film and its story with the local community. Joined by producer Katie Schiller, we had the opportunity to share more about the filmmaking process and the journey of bringing this deeply personal story to the screen during the post-screening Q&A. Thank you to the @montclairfilm for welcoming us and for bringing together an audience to experience a story of love, loss, and the power of photography as a way to remember, reflect, and heal. We’re grateful to have had the opportunity to share this story with you! Before he was the subject of a film, Maurice Berger was one of the most important voices writing about race and imagery and art in America. Maurice was an art critic and curator, best known for his New York Times column “Race Stories.” He was one of COVID’s earliest U.S. victims, in March 2020. David Friend talks about Maurice’s work and why it matters to Maurice and Marvin, the documentary short about Maurice’s husband, Marvin Heiferman, and the Instagram account (@whywelook) he turned to in his grief. Maurice and Marvin screened at the Woodstock and Austin Film Festivals this past month. 🎧 Full conversation is up now on the BTB channel. Why @davidmfriend1 made his short @mauriceandmarvin 🎬 David has known Marvin Heiferman for years through his books and photography exhibitions. Then COVID hit, and Marvin lost his husband, the art critic and curator Maurice Berger, in the pandemic’s earliest weeks. In the middle of that grief, and a world in despair, Marvin turned to Instagram. Every day he posted a single photograph on @whywelook that captured what he was feeling. Thousands of people followed along. They found solace, relatability, and community in a space we usually think of as alienating. David was one of them. Having lost loved ones himself in recent years, he saw his own experience in Marvin’s photographs and asked Marvin to let him tell the story on film. We talk about what drew him to it, and what it means that a social platform became a place to grieve together. 🎧 Full conversation is up now on the BTB channel.
