Why @davidmfriend1 made his short @mauriceandmarvin 🎬

David has known Marvin Heiferman for years through his books and photography exhibitions.

Then COVID hit, and Marvin lost his husband, the art critic and curator Maurice Berger, in the pandemic’s earliest weeks. In the middle of that grief, and a world in despair, Marvin turned to Instagram.

Every day he posted a single photograph on @whywelook that captured what he was feeling.

Thousands of people followed along. They found solace, relatability, and community in a space we usually think of as alienating. David was one of them.

Having lost loved ones himself in recent years, he saw his own experience in Marvin’s photographs and asked Marvin to let him tell the story on film.

We talk about what drew him to it, and what it means that a social platform became a place to grieve together.
