In 1981, my family immigrated from the Philippines to the US. My dad and sisters Dulce and Nina went first, and my mom and I followed three months later. Aside from a trip in 1985, we haven’t returned to the homeland as a family.

Forty-three years later, we returned and brought our families for a unique heritage tour. We’ve visited mom and dad’s family homes, the restaurant where they met, the church where they got married, and the subdivisions our family lived in.

One special treat was a tour of Holy Angel University, where my parents both went to college and where my Dad also taught for a few years. Mom shared that the first time she saw Dad was when he passed her in the hallway, and her friend remarked that she had previously dated him.

My parents’ names were listed in the alumni room, and we even found a photo of my dad.

Holy Angel also hosts the Center for Kapampangan Studies to preserve our dying language and the cultural heritage of the kapampangan people. Many young people in Pampanga no longer speak or even understand our native tongue, Filipino (based on Tagalog), and English has taken a predominant role at home and at school.

It has been amazing to watch Addison and her cousins so interested in their family history and cultural heritage. She’s even urging me to speak kapampangan while I’m here so she can learn it. I can fully understand, but speaking is a struggle for me.

Joshua Tree this week, this time camping. Super cold and some rough wind still way more fun than the traffic getting there.

A scrambling hike through Hidden Valley and with grippy boulders and no signal our kids explored the specificities of the high desert. After short days we reminisced, discovered planets, and counted shooting stars.

Oh my way back home with my new e-cargo bike on WETA ferry. We documented SF’s biggest event w/ @jakubmosur team photojournalism friends for a week.

I easily fit my full camera backpack, tripod, travel duffel.

We got our first e-cargo bike a year ago to take our kid to school and that was a life changer so I got another for work and that’s working great too. This week prob saved $300 in parking, tolls, gas, plus hours in traffic.

Thanks to @alamedabicycle for all your help with the Tern HSD!
