New York City Marathon 2024

A bucket list item for a kips bay kid ✅

In reflecting on the entire experience, I could not be more thankful. Not because I PR’d or ran the race I had trained so hard for - far from it.

Half way through, when a decade’s long battle with my right knee returned with excruciating pain, I thought that my race was coming to an immediate painful end. Sometimes these things go for you, and sometimes they don’t.

But I’ve got a lot of love in my life. My beautiful partner, amazing family, childhood friends, and a running family that you could bet your life on had supported me every step of the way @dirtybirdrc . With that kind of love - stopping the race wasn’t an option. So I decided it was time to do what I have always done in the challenging moments. I took a walk. I walked for 10 seconds and ran for 10 seconds.

Miles 14-18 felt like a lifetime of negotiating with myself in 10 second intervals. Walls are temporary.

At mile 18, I ran under a flock of birds flying in a loop. The love was still with me.

At mile 22, the pain was unstoppable. So I took my shoes off to be more grounded.

At mile 26, I gave Natalya a kiss. I felt the touch of home I needed.

At mile 26.2 I said thank you to everyone I could see. I said thank you to everyone I couldn’t see.

Running has given me so much love and so much pain - I am grateful for both. Thank you to running for showing me the power of perspective and the power of gratitude. Today I learned that while every mile has its own story, more often than not, it’s up to us to determine whether it is a happy one.

For me, this one was a happy story

Can’t wait to toe the line in 2025 - it has always been and it will always be New York or nothing ❤️🦶✌️
