Some records are much more than records.

I recently finished listening to all five vinyl records of John Digweed’s Live at Twilo, and it got me thinking about the history behind that iconic dancefloor.

One fascinating detail many people might not know: Twilo occupied the very same building that had previously housed Sound Factory, where Frankie Knuckles held a residency in the early ’90s.

John Digweed first played at Twilo in 1996, and in 1997 he and Sasha began their residency there, helping turn the club into one of the defining destinations of the progressive house era.

It’s remarkable to think about that continuity: from Frankie Knuckles and the Chicago house sound to Sasha & Digweed and the British progressive movement, all connected to the same New York address.

One thing that particularly struck me throughout the set was the number of vocal tracks. I’ve often heard that too many vocals can break the flow of a progressive journey, yet Digweed shows how the right voice, at the right moment, can make that journey even more powerful.

Perhaps it’s not about how many vocals a set contains, but how they’re used.

My vinyl box is numbered 0086/1000, and the signed print is numbered 235/500.

More than a collector’s item, it’s a piece of musical history that continues to influence what I listen to, play and produce. by @maxbeillou
