Exhibition Opening! Friday, September 25th from 6pm @galeriegt Biarritz.

Galerie Grécourt is pleased to present Déjà vu , a group exhibition bringing together four contemporary painters: @carsonbutterbaugh @johnwentz @marywestpaintings and @maxberry

There are works of art that we recognize before we understand them. A figure fading into the light, a forest we’ve never walked through, a garden suspended between dream and memory. And yet. That strange, sweet feeling of having been there before, without knowing where or when.
Emotional spaces we recognize without having experienced them, atmospheres that seem to belong to everyone and no one.

Déjà vu explores this uncertain memory, made up of images, sensations, and familiar fragments. A memory that may not exist, but whose echo remains.

Max Berry tackles a broad range of subjects, from landscapes and figures to mythic scenes and seemingly banal everyday objects. His paintings carry an allegorical atmosphere and possess a quiet poetic power. He works like a collector, amassing libraries of material that intrigues him without always being fully understood, and only after working through these images in various stages does he bring them to the canvas, where he paints in oils relatively quickly, sometimes finishing a piece in a single session. The resulting pictures build a world where motifs can be symbolic, obscured or warped, expressing the slipperiness of representation through painting and the inherently subjective nature of experience and memory. Berry’s understated works invite careful contemplation, offering no easy readings but instead asking the viewer to sit with what is uncertain, what is half remembered, and what painting itself can and cannot hold. taken in China Heights Gallery by @maxberry

What conditions allow ideas to emerge most freely?

“Absurdity and Ease.

Attempting to apply a theoretical discipline to control intuition and knowing the that an unconscious process cannot be governed by conscious volition.

I only aim to record and recall when something falls into place, as if into its predestined pattern, when something familiar is seen in a new light; followed by the rise, expansion and ebb of self transcending emotion.

Doing so simply, with the tools and experience at my disposal.

‘The forceps of our minds are clumsy things and crush the truth a little in the course of taking hold. ‘ HG Wells.” — Max Berry, Sunshine Coast, Australia @maxberry
