5 years ago my life shifted drastically. My son Levi was born in November of 2019… and within 5 months the world shut down… along with any income I had, with very little in the bank.
At the time, like most, I had no idea what was happening, let alone how to respond. Every one of my clients postponed, and my mentality was “we’re all in this together”… which looking back now, was the first domino of many that would set the tone for the next 5 years of my life.
With no job or income, I was scrambling, yet it felt more like spiraling… anxiety was escalating, and if it wasn’t for a few people, I’m not sure I would have made it out… and I have never told them this. I met @martingero filming his wedding, he’s an extremely talented director, and he came to me in the middle of the pandemic and asked me to edit some home videos for him, I know for sure he could have easily done them himself, or someone else in his network, but he asked me… and he did it 3-4 times, paying me more than what I quoted him. I couldn’t tell if he knew I was struggling, but either way, I’m so deeply grateful. And then @jasonradical took a leap of faith in me, hiring me to help film a few documentaries he was working on… he became a fast friend, he’s someone I looked up to when I started filming… it was a huge honor, and he helped keep my head above water, until I could breath again.
But the damage had been done with postponements and new clients clashing, I was bottle necked with edits, and it’s taken me 4 years to recover. I say all these things because life hasn’t felt the same since… I’ve felt like I’ve been on a treadmill, running faster and faster feeling like I’ll never catch up. It’s been overwhelming and exhausting, to the point of burn out. Emotionally and physically drained.
But I’ve always been someone who just keeps pushing through, I’ll just keep working and going until the wheels fall off. It’s amazing what we can endure and overcome, except it’s taken a toll on my spirit, and my personal life. It has come at a great cost. Looking back I would change so many things. Father and Son
“From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen…”

Such powerful and heartbreaking words this morning.
If there is an absolute truth about fatherhood (or any relationship for that matter) — it is a mirror — and a threshold to the sacred space of Christ.
I have wrestled with the concept of God as “Father” for years… why is it a masculine figure… why is it referenced as a human figure at all?
Until I became a father.
And now, it’s as clear as crystal… the relationship between a father (or mother) and child is holy ground for divine transformation. No other relationship will require more of you… to love in a way that shows you exactly what God’s love looks like in the world.
It’s a metaphor… but the truth it holds is as strong (if not stronger) than if God was an actual “heavenly father”.
It’s a sign — to pay attention — to listen — but the lesson I have learned is that it’s ME that begs to listen from my son. His voice, his heart, his pains, his joys… come to me my son, I want to listen to what you have to say. And THIS is the posture of “God” the great listener… the one that wants to sit down with me and ask, what’s on your heart today, my son?

This is me looking back…

Have you seen the film, About Time?

It’s about… time, of course. But it’s mostly about life and the relationships that shape us. And the moments in time that we look back upon and (perhaps) for a moment, wish we could change. The choices we make, the turns we take, the road we go down, the things we say, the New Year’s Eve that didn’t go the way you thought it would. They all add up to our life in the present.

I often think about what I would change about my life looking back (there’s a lot), but then, I quickly realize that the person I am today would not be the same, I wouldn’t have the same depth and shape if I tried to take away the “what ifs” or the pain.

*Spoiler alert* the lead character finally creates the life he always dreamed of, yet, he comes to a threshold where he can no longer go back and change the story the way he wants it, otherwise he would have to let go of it all. And the consequence is losing his father in the present. There’s a scene at the end where it flashes back to a time in his life with his dad as a young boy… one last goodbye along the beach, skipping stones (tears flowing).

And what I take from this is… your life… even the hard goodbyes, the scars… are a part of what makes it so beautifully tragic, even the sting of death can bring depth to life, and make it all worth living.

It can be hard to remain grateful when life isn’t what you thought it’d be… or when the stings keep coming (and they will)… yet, isn’t the pain the same pain that transformed you before? The scars are the same signs of growth, stretch marks from an older you that is no longer? The choices are what made you… the richness and fullness of the mountains and valleys are what guided you, it’s uniquely your’s… and you finally look back about time with a smile. by @maxcutrone

Ali and Jake
The ease of this day left an imprint on me.
One of the most anticipated life events, set on one of the most anticipated nights of the year. A bold decision.
Although I know it was anything but easy to curate, I believe the tone was set with Ali and Jake. They were composed, calm, joyful and connected to each other and their community. They were never stressed or hurried, and allowed things to flow as they happened — embraced the moments and lived them to their fullest. I was inspired by their joy and peace with one another — a reflection of what they have built over the years — it was an honor to witness and as you can see, a lot of fun to experience. Congratulations you two, you have a new admirer and friend in me… and bravo to Meredith and the team for such an extraordinary event.
