A few things I’m feeling especially grateful for today:
•My family who I got to celebrate with last weekend
•Everybody who took the time to share kind birthday well wishes yesterday
•All the friends I got to spend time with yesterday (and those tomorrow)
•PTO. Because today’s recovery has been a rough one. But nothing soup can’t fix. by @maxfhalm

When I woke up on the first day of fall 2026, did I have any idea it would be a perfectly crisp, autumn, sweater-weather, Chicago day?

I didn’t.

Did I know that when I woke up that same day that the soup recipe I had selected to commemorate the (arguably) very first day of soup season would require me to wield the immersion blender?

Of course not. But sometimes you just get lucky.

And feeling even luckier with how my inaugural bacon & white cheddar bisque + ham, honey dijon, Gruyère, and apple grilled cheese turned out 🥰

Gonna be a fruitful soup season 💅🏻 by @maxfhalm

While I thoroughly enjoyed Dirty Dancing (even without having ever seen the movie!) and would like to leave detailed thoughts, I’m going to use this opportunity to BEG @broadwayinchicago to please better train their ushers to deal with drunk guests who think they’re part of the show - disrupting the entire theater with waving their arms in the air as they dance in their seats, shouting responses back at the performers, hollering every time a man takes his shirt off, and screaming the lyrics - which persisted throughout the ENTIRETY of the second act. I love Broadway in Chicago. It’s the highlight of my week anytime I have tickets to a show. But theater tickets are far too expensive to deal with such blatant disrespect to go unnoticed. This was without a doubt the worst theater experience I’ve ever had, which is a shame for a show that I was enjoying. taken in James M. Nederlander Theatre by @maxfhalm

Show 22 of 2026: The Notebook musical

Overall it was well done, but I’m not sure the one or two songs that I enjoyed convinced me that the performance was better served as a musical rather than a standard stage play.

But this experience did inspire tip #2 from the yet-to-be written “Sassy Theater Gay’s Unofficial Guide to Theater Etiquette” - If, for the past 45 minutes, your body has not required the sustenance of your plastic-wrapped M&Ms, your appetite can surely remain equally satiated until the end of the most tense, dead silent scene of the performance. Unpackage your snacks before the curtains go up or wait for an audible distraction. taken in James M. Nederlander Theatre by @maxfhalm

Shows 20 and 21 of 2026: Hair and The Outsiders (round two!):

Though I had little idea what Hair was about going in, I was particularly excited for this show (in large part because I’d loved the songs Aquarius and Let the Sunshine In since my first iPod and because Kokandy Productions has earned the love).

While it was really fun to watch and the immersive staging was exciting , especially in how it managed to tie in modern social struggles to those of the Vietnam-era U.S., it felt as though the production was trying to achieve too much with too little. I appreciate when a show manages to do so effectively, but considering the size of this cast, the breadth of scenes, and the setting alternating between reality and a dreamscape, the story would have been easier to follow had not a significant portion relied on the viewer’s imagination.

That being said, I got what I came for: A powerful performance of Aquarius and Let the Sunshine In (the latter being far more emotional than I had anticipated). And Chicago’s local talent in Kokandy again deserves all of the love.

As for The Outsiders, this second viewing pushed the show into my top 5 favorite of all time. I went from appreciating it several months ago to falling in love with it the second time. My greedy ass will be hustling to get a second lottery win before it leaves this weekend. by @maxfhalm
