Next conference on the schedule: @nolamusicon! This will be my third year in a row speaking at this conference, and I’m looking forward to connecting with familiar and new folks. Once again I’ll be teaching copyright and contract fundamentals. If you’re an artist, writer, producer - or even a manager or agent - you can’t miss this session. It’s the foundation for *everything* else! More details as the event gets closer. For now: mark your calendar! taken in The George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center by @maxhassesq

Looking forward to speaking on not one, but two panels at @cuttingedgenola conference next weekend! It’s been many years since my last time attending this conference, and this will be my first time speaking at it. If you work in music and you’re either in New Orleans or planning a visit, I highly encourage you to come to this conference. It will be filled with industry-leading experts, and there will be many panels and talks on very interesting topics throughout the weekend.

Panel #1 for me is Thursday afternoon, where we’ll be talking about the significance of trademark protection in virtual realms. Your brand is still your brand no matter where you use it, but protection can vary by jurisdiction. Plus, the insidious threat of AI actors in the marketplace can accelerate infringement and protection concerns.

Panel #2, Friday morning, is all about the evolution of music industry contracts in the modern era. We’ll be talking about the ways the industry has responded to the presence of AI, what a “360” deal means today vs. 20 years ago, and more. taken in InterContinental New Orleans by @maxhassesq

Free filmmaker masterclass!!! We’re very excited to have @maxhassesq teach this very important class on protecting your artistic film investment.

In this Master Class, we will discuss film-relevant aspects of copyright, the fundamentals of contracts, and discuss some of the most common contracts used in the film and video industries. You will also learn how to ask the right questions and structure contracts in a way that protects your interests and treats collaborators fairly, while preventing unintended loopholes that allow third parties to exploit your work in ways that you don’t approve.

As always, our classes are at no cost to filmmakers and are in person at 1100 S 6th Ave and Online through www.soazfilm.org

Thank you for having me @nolamusicon!
.
It feels great being back in New Orleans full-time, and I love getting the opportunity to teach. This time around I’m framing things as *protecting your investment* — because that’s what your art is. You pour your heart, soul, pain, and love into your craft; knowing how to work with copyrights and contracts is how you prevent others from unfairly taking your investment away from you or diluting its value. Hit me up if you want to learn more about how to navigate this crazy complicated entertainment business.
.
PS it was total coincidence that they put my workshop in a classroom of basses — but you know I’m not going to have a problem with that!

Is New Orleans on your mind lately? Maybe you’re at Jazz Fest or wish you were? Now is a great time to have NOLA on your mind, because we are just days away from #GiveNOLA Day! This year is a special one for me, because I recently joined the board of @court13arts and we could use your support!
.
Court 13 Arts is a New Orleans-based nonprofit working to grow and sustain New Orleans’ cinema culture by advancing visual literacy, fostering creative education, and inspiring community-driven collaboration. We do this through the weekly Gap Tooth Cinema screenings (come out to the next one May 7 at @thebroadnola!), providing affordable studio spaces to artists at our Franklin St warehouse, offering fiscal sponsorships and mentorships to filmmakers, and by building community spaces for filmmakers and artists to connect.
.
In 2025, we’re fundraising not only to sustain our ongoing programming, but also to bring back the #AlwaysForPleasure Festival!
.
Early giving is now open, and Give NOLA Day is Tuesday, May 6. We would love to have your support and include you in our community!

Join us on Monday, January 27th, from 10:00 am - 12:30 pm at TechPlug for an interactive workshop led by entertainment attorney and musician Max Hass! This session will give artists, songwriters, producers, and managers the information they need to properly get music registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, PROs, The MLC, SoundExchange. The class will also provide an overview of important copyright fundamentals that everyone in the music industry should know, and explain how split sheets, co-writers agreements, session musician agreements, and other contracts work to protect creators’ interests. With these tools in hand, musicians and their teams will be ready to get their music licensed, and start seeing the mailbox money come in.

We ask attendees bring a notebook or something to take notes with at a minimum; preferably bring a laptop or tablet so that they can follow along with our walkthroughs of signing up with PROs, MLC, etc.

Free to attend—just RSVP on Eventbrite, link in stories and bio! Food will be provided. #musiceducation #neworleansmusic by @maxhassesq
